What a majestic species. A few years back while hiking I kept running across them a few feet off the trail, as well in open areas where the trail would meet a lakeside. I got the distinct feeling that they were hunting. Waiting patiently for an unlucky traveler to fall victim to its stark contrast against the drab forest floor. Facilitating the decay and providing sustenance for other fungal species.
Though I was a bit high haha.
I do find though that cannabis does help me tune into plant consciousness way better then baseline, haha so I still find validity to my insight.

This is an interesting one! Overall it's too robust and with a much more prominent annulus than A. bisporigera - I placed it somewhere in the elliptosperma group (elliptosperma, magnivelaris, pseudoverna etc.) but wasn't sure which species in that group it was specifically.
I ended up discussing this with a scary good Amanita macromorphologist who quickly nailed it on A. pseudoverna. Not a common find! ID features: Southern US distribution, large, prominent annulus without thickening or felting (vs magnivelaris), stipe with scaling/slightly floccose ornamentation.

w03: Really great information! Thank you! Iβve seen a couple of these on recent hikes. Iβve never heard of A. Pseudoverna, and canβt find any information on them. Can you guide me to a source to quench my thirst for information?
Soloist: I love your perspective and creativity. You might be right! I havenβt done cannabis in probably 20 years but I can see how it would certainly enhance the hunting experience.

Some more info is present on Rod Tulloss's site. http://www.amanitaceae.org/?Amanita+pseudoverna
However, that particular page is not very complete, and you'd be best served going to one of the Amanita-specific discussion groups for the most recent information.

I believe it's the way this site resizes the pic. Sometimes if I upload a large file it will severely lower the quality.
