Is it foolish to try to proceed with this?
    #23765137 - 10/23/16 07:33 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

First post.  Total noob.

This is a half gallon of pan cyan on corn with a little vermiculite.  I'm 95% sure this is contamination, but it has been colonized for a while and lost a bit of moisture.  I had read somewhere pan cyan mycelium can turn bluish if it gets kinda dry. So part of me is hoping it's just a bit dried out.  I've been busy and haven't had time to proceed with it (and a little unsure the best route to take with it).

Is it worth trying to put this to hpoo/straw, or is it a total loss?

Thank you all. This site is amazing!  You guys and gals rock!!!

I wouldn't think it would get dry enough to bruise in the jar like that. Keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't go green or black.

If they all look like that and it's 100% go for it, but might be back tear.

If that were cube myc I'd toss it no questions asked

Never grown cyans but if I saw that while colonizing grain I would also toss.
Does healthy cyan myc look like bacterial cube myc?

All I have to say for you is I don't like it one bit
Toss

I did agar to grain.  I'm going to go for it.  I need to pick up some supplies today.  Maybe I can get my hpoo/straw pasteurized today, and get it in a monotub tomorrow morning.

Isolate the jar and let it go. The worst that can happen is it goes green or black. If that happens take outside, pour bleach on it and discard. I use bleach so as not to spread the contamination, bleach kills everything lol.

Bleach doesn't kill everything. It might kill the living mold, MIGHT, but once it dries up, the mold spores would be viable again. But, outside it wouldn't make much of a difference. There's literally like half a million mold spores in any random cubic inch of non-hepa filtered air almost anywhere on the planet. The way jet streams move air currents, I would even say they're at the poles and in the deserts, there just not as likely to germinate in those places.

Edit: I'm not sure if the way I spelled desert means the snacks or the sandy dry places, but I meant it as the sandy dry places. Lol.

Desert - sandy, dry place
Dessert - tasty, tasty goodness

You are correct!

could it be possible that the yellow blotchy areas in the spawn jars are metabolites from the pan mycelium having difficulty digesting the popcorn? in any case, it would be better to use some other grain for spawn. popcorn is hard to digest and it's lacking in the number of inoculation points. and it's best to combine your grainspawn with your substrate once it has reached full visible colonization. if it sits around too long it will start to have trouble colonizing new material. you could still squeeze a flush out of this but don't count your chickens until they are hatched. i will be curious to see how it works out for you so keep us informed.

This pan jar is bacterial af. Also 2nd pic looks like it could have mycogone on the top.

I really wouldn't be trusting these jars at all..

The trick they taught us was to replace the 't' with a 'w'. 'Wheir' isn't a word, but 'where' is a place. So 'there' is also a place.
