Gymnopilus luteus is pretty likely if you took this photo in the eastern part of USA or the midwest.

definitely gymnopilus. I would say it's almost definitely in the gymnopilus Junonius species group (which includes g. Luteus). As such it's likely active, though there is a large range of potency even amongst the active species in this group, so much so that some collections reported seem to be close to inactive whilst some are roughly 1/2 the potency of cubes (according to anecdotal reports at least). Is there any green staining?

Yeah it does have little bits of green tinge here and there. I also have a smaller one about half the size it's obviously the same thing there's a picture of it in my gallery there's also some pictures I got a few weeks ago that I never got an actual ID on if anybody's bored enough to take a look for me

nice find.  what is the tree type?  looks much like Asimina triloba and i think you're in/near the northern extent of its range.

It's not atypical. You may find areas where they are all over or you may find one all season.

As for the tree, pawpaws are fantastic. If that identification is correct you should pursue it. I think in your area you could expect ripe fruit in the autumn. They have an amazing tropical character (flavor, texture) that one might not expect to associate with the midwest.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Hypholoma, probably H. fasciculare.
