Sterilizing Plain Glassware?
    #23764940 - 10/23/16 06:16 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Hey. I have an Erlenmeyer flask that I bought to pour my agar. Unfortunately, it doesn't fit in my pressure cooker. Would it be possible or even worth it to sterilize the flask and the agar solution (in a mason jar) separately, then pour them in a SAB?

Could I sterilize the Erlenmeyer flask with an oven? If so, how long and what temp? Would a small toaster-oven work? If I'm doing it an an oven anyway, should I skip the pressure cooker and do the agar in the oven too?

Honestly if I had to go through that many tribulations just to pour agar I would pour straight from a jar.

I'm afraid of it dribbling off the side and making a mess of my SAB and wasting agar

I've poured from a jar before.
While far from ideal, it's not impossible and you wont drip that much agar if you're careful.

That being said;
I recommend buying a smaller media bottle, one that fits in your PC.
Pouring from a jar isn't fun and I would hate to have to sterilize two separate things just to pour.

750-1000mL liquor bottles work great.

If you have a short PC, maybe try a $2 juice bottle from the corner store...

Or... buy a bigger pressure cooker? :stoned:

I've been pouring straight from a jar because all if my liquor bottles are too tall. It seems to pour just fine with no mess
