Why grain?
    #23764159 - 10/23/16 12:29 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Just curious as to the advantages and disadvantages of grain and why people tend to move there after pf tek.

Nutritious, breaks up easy if clean, inexpensive, multiple spread points are some reasons.

Because grain can be spawned to bulk which equals a much higher yield than cakes.. Cakes can be crumbled and spawned to bulk but grain is the preferred method if you are looking to get into bulk

Much cheaper for grains then flour. So yield fir price is higher. One good grain jar can make 100 more in month with g2g which is easier then making 100 qts of cakes in same time. Drawbacks is contam rate is higher. Water content is more important and hard to master starting out. And what you knock up mush be clean

Lots of reasons really.  Yields are the biggest reason though in my opinion.

But here are some other reasons:

-used in bulk monos, the surface area greatly increased, therefore increasing the fruiting area

-much easier to manage surface moisture with spawn to bulk, takes mush less maintenance and effort for an increased gain

-Grain breaks apart easily in the jar, making it the #1 method of expansion by grain to grain transfers.  You can literally turn 1 jar into a 100 inside of a month if you chose to.

-Grain is highly nutritious to mycelium, and when fully colonized, is nearly impervious (a little enthusiastic) to contamination if the spawn was properly sterilized and is clean.

-Did I mention yields?

Anybody serious about cultivation uses grain and a lot of it.  I myself have a 50lb of triple cleaned whole oats on deck which I use regularly with very little issues with contamination.  (About 1 in 10 contaminate, making the success rate about 90%).  If I were to tighten up my sterile processes I could probably turn that into 99% very easily.

Higher yields for less effort and cost. Lower maintenance. Nicer quality fruits generally.

pf tek is like a microwave dinner.

grains are like eating somewhere nice and getting blown(or eaten out)afterwards.

also grains are both food and water holder.

verm cant feed mushrooms so its 'wasted' space. grains are 2:1 deal.

aa+ in the first 4 cambo in the last two

flush three is worthless, my substrates are spent after the second one. and for the little dinky shits that come out of flush three it's not worth the long ass time it takes to get them.

you should pump out all the fruits worth fruiting in the first 2

I realize I'm hijacking this thread now but how is that accomplished exactly? Good genetics?

My tub produced two canopies around the same size in a row and then a shit tonne of monsters for flush three.
All three flushes maxed out my dehydrator so I was happy with it.
Flush 4 is sticking around to see if I get even bigger monsters. I'm only seeing 3 or 4 pins. I don't have spawn ready yet so I figured fuck it let's see it through.
