Terry Gilliam and Kubrick and Lynch and Hayao Miyazaki stand out to me. Ridley Scott did some great stuff but also an equal number of shitty things.
I don't know how Peter Jackson can possibly be on that list he's made three good movies total

I'm sad that no one's mentioned John Carpenter yet.

Him and Kubrick are my top two favourite directors. There's other good ones mentioned in that list. I've liked every film I've seen by Richard Linklater but I'm not sure.

And, I doubt anyone else would agree with this, but Paul Verhoeven is one of my favourite directors of all time. You can call his movies trash, but Starship Troopers and Robocop are classic action films, that should have never had lunchboxes and other kids merchandise made of them.

I think that the absolute greatest directors have to have done some ov their best and most visionary work on a low budget, such as Jarman, Lynch with Eraserhead, etc.  Having a low budget to work with makes it necessary to reify one's creativity if one is to be viewed as original and captivating.  While a large budget affords less limitations, the direction is only leveraged by the more extensive elements.  A great director can craft a fine film without the dog and pony show, or even good acting.

Kevin Smith's Clerks was a great example of that.

Edgar Wright, perhaps too early to say (only has 4 movies) but everything he has done so far is a piece of fresh sliced gold. Friedkin, Tarantino, Scorsese, Cronenberg , Carpenter, jodorowsky & etc whom I really appreciate have already been mentioned.

Charlie Kaufman has only directed like one movie right? Hes definitely one of the greatest screenwriters ever tho.
Spike Jonze should be on the list.

M Night Shyamalan is the worst director in hollywood. It is a joke that hes still making movies. I mean lady in the water, the happening, the last airbender... cmon. Hes also an arrogant prick who comments on his many critics saying that he has a european sensibility that most westerners just don't get. gimme a break. and whats with him putting himself in all his movies? like he thinks hes the new hitchcock or something. god I really can't stand the guy.

I actually watched Lady in the Water last night and, by golly, was it some vile trash!  I did kind ov like The Last Airbender to be honest, although that's more ov a guilty pleasure rather than a movie i seriously considered to be good.  But is it the work ov a great director?  Hells no!  Does he actually claim to have a European sensibility?  That's a joke.  People like Emir Kusturica(who DEFINITELY deserves to be on the list) who can create a hilarious comedy while still interjecting deep Serbo-Croatian political undercurrents have a European sensibility.  M Knight makes movies akin to simple fantasy novels targeted for the 9-15y/o age range.  So yeah, i agree.

Best is hard to measure and personal.  My personal favorite directors who i also consider to be top tier are Jarman, Peckinpah, Jodorowsky, and Kusturica.  There are other directors i consider amongst my favorites(like Araki and R. Stanley), but i would'nt consider them top tier, just as there's a bunch ov top tier ones that i would'nt call my favorites.

On the M Night Shymalalon thing; I liked "Signs", but nothing else held any interest for me. It's Always  Sunny in Philadelphia had an episode about him. I think M Night peaked early. It brings to mind Michael Cimino, who became a God for the Deerhunter, and then by all accounts destroyed Hollywood big budget forever with Heaven's Gate, a western with some really good actors. They gave him a huge budget, and he lost almost every cent of it. They say Heaven's Gate was the turning point when the big money backers in Hollywood said we will never give this kind of money to a "creative" again and  the business was taken over by accountants, which is why big budget movies usually suck. A good example is how Hollywood can't think of any new ideas, or wont fund them, and keep pouring money into remakes of 60's or 70's TV comedies.  Independent  moviemakers  still do some good stuff, but in general, Cable TV series (pay stations or not) are better than movies.

I think the ones I like have been mentioned, but to throw them out there.

Terrence Malick - probably my favorite although this may be the point in my life.
Ingmar Bergman. I really enjoyed him just out of college. I got obsessed and started collecting all his dvds.
In college, Charlie Kaufmann as a writer or director, not sure which.
Being John Malkovich blew my mind the first time I saw it. Now I think I might like other of his movies better.
Hayao Miyazaki. Always liked him from when I was a kid, athough I know his name itself is more or less synonomous with great anime.
Then there is Stanley Kubrik...
And of course David Lynch.

I don't think I am up to date on very current directors. But let's see; I don't want to miss a Christopher Nolan film. On the other hand he is also not making anything too memorable either. Great "concepts" and spectacle though.

The last great movie I saw was in Danish; The Hunt, by Thomas Vinterberg...

I didn't know this guy, but apparently I should. And Justice for All and Agnes of God, which I liked and 5 other ones that I know were big.

    Thank you for informing me.
