Question about politics * 1
    #23763333 - 10/23/16 06:44 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

So last thanksgiving or some holiday gathering..me and my sister were talking about our views on abortion and gay marriage. She was saying that shes all for gay marriage and i was saying im all for abortion.

Then my aunt steps in and tells us that it is rude to talk politics like that with your family.

I got offended by this.

I see her point but i always believed that all secrets must be shared.

What do you guys think?

That's what people say when they don't like your politics.

You never heard of not
discussing  religion, politics (or money) at the family table, especially if drinking's involved?
That was kind of a rule when I grew up.

There's often enough tension or stress at holiday gatherings too, no need to start trouble troll. :arabs:

I work on a boat. The general rule is don't talk about politics. You could pick up an etiquette book if you like. I'm sure you will find its bad form to talk politics at family gatherings. Tensions are usually pretty high already; why stir the pot?

That being said, I suck at adhering to this rule. I am passionate and opinionated, and election season is hard for me to STFU.

Side note, I'm pro-choice and for marriage equality. You might be careful about saying you're "all for abortion." Nobody is for killing babies. It's a tough decision I'm happy to have a penis about. The main reason is not because it makes you sound twisted, which it does, but that it makes you sound stupid. Your argument won't go very far saying something like that. If you are care about a woman's right to choose, don't start your argument with that line.

such wise responses

but if i cant express my views to my family..then who? Im sick of dumping my shit on the shroomery...i have been quite distant from my family and im trying to reverse that..that is why i got offended when she told me it was rude.

Maybe it was just misplaced positive intention on my part...who knows

Good evening folks, we're here again for another episode of 'who baits shroomery best'!

Please welcome our host for tonight, Bill Oreilly!

*claps*

Nah but really, last time I tried to incite intelligent conversation about 'red button topics' with my family, such as the banning of the burqini in France, I found out that nearly all of them are a part of the majority that believe muslim people should "go back to where they fuckin' came from", and that they dont believe its a human right to be able to wear any item of clothing you choose.

10/10 would not recommend. Leave family to believe their shit, as we want to be left to believe ours. Most won't adhere to logical debate, it'll devolve into emotional shit slinging.

If you're trying to get closer with them, bringing up sensitive issues and getting easily offended is a bad start.

I think the reason most people are taught
"it is rude to talk about religion or politics"
is because most people simply cannot talk about these
either because they are severly uninformed
or cannot discuss it civily like an adult.
This type of of social rule is mainly in place
to present nastiness between two people where there shouldnt be any.

I love a good, respectful debate myself
but the moment I am personally disrespected with ad hominems
then that is where you are below me

My family always argues politics on thanksgiving.  Its like a tradition.  One year was pretty funny though.  My wealthy, conservative, aunt was complaining that Michelle Obama had suggested that people try to grow a vegetable garden.  She was going on and on about it "How dare she!" she said.  "Its more expensive to have a garden than to buy them at the market" she said.  I eventually laughed right in her face and was like "please, be serious for a minute, are you actually ranting about vegetable gardens?  You seem to really hate the woman, and its over a vegetable garden?  Lets talk about something that matters."

You think talking politics is bad?  One year I was going through a rough time in life.  I ate a handful of benzos, blacked out, and apparently I was trying to fuck the thanksgiving turkey while everyone else was at the table eating.  Turns out when you mistake a turkey for a fleshlight at a family gathering, there aren't really any taboo topics anymore.

Growing up, there was always a rule that you don't talk politics at the dinner table. If I'm with friends or whatever I'll do it, but if it's a more serious dinner I do think it's bad to talk politics at the table (especially if it's a business related dinner, etc.).

It seems more like one of those crazy ancient rules like "you only throw them in the fire if they believein god" type deals they used to peddle

Agreed.

Politics is a dangerous topic, almost taboo. It creates a lot of conflict when two opposing parties met, like Conversatives and Progressives for example.

Talking politics is like playing with fire. Same with talking conspiracy theories.

also it's one of those traditions, like many, that while it has an understandable social basis, it really seems to serve the oligarchs. Along with don't talk about your wages etc,

if communication between the lower classes is snuffed out, even at that basic level, it helps ignorance to spread and ignorance of shared problems, shared views etc helps keep people complacent or at least dis-empowered. If people talked openly about these things, I genuinely believe we would be better off as a society and as a species.

Actually it's because i spelled your name wrong, And Emil is a progressive who loves banning dissenters for the slightest thing

Are you enjoying your echo chamber?

Are you having fun patting yourselves on the back and telling each other how "smart" you are?

This whole echo-chamber thing couldn't be more ironic considering the disproportionate amount of conservatives in political discussions on here. Very over-represented.

Abortion is irrelevant beyond knowing it is yourself experience the death and birth process.  in consideration you can prevent this earlier yes.  With a condom.  Or if you feel this is the "one" then mate!  Any life process is onesself ypu feel this too.  Every action, every thought, causes a reaction.  Be aware now.  Change the future.

This practice of not talking about politics at the dinner table is getting a bad name. Let me tell you how it worked in my family:

If allowed to talk politics at the dinner table, every dinner would end in a massive fight in which the liberal members of the family and the conservative members of the family would each tell the other to go fuck themselves and any other bad things they might think of, and if it was a very serious fight it might even end in a fistfight. The entire family would be split apart along political lines if we were allowed to talk politics at the dinner table.

So your family gets butthurt easily? I hope mine wouldn't react that way because killing babies is a good thing IMO
