Agaricus. You said it smells like the store bought ones, so maybe it's edible. I'm not sure on the species.

Agaricus silvicola may be in the right direction.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Thank you. After you replied about the smell. I re-smelled them (without the dirt. I get a very faint fish smell and maybe even VERY slight felt marker? smell. Hard to describe. Would be nice if they are edible...there are tons of them. How can I study further to find out what species and if they are safe...Thanks again

If an Agaricus has a chemical smell like marker, ink, etc it is generally not one to eat. A. silvicola should smell like button mushrooms but some degree of sweet and almondy.

If it smells like a felt pen then it could be something like Agaricus xanthodermus, which is not edible, although any yellowing does not seem so prominent in your pictures, and this species produces quite bright yellowing.

A general rule of thumb with Agaricus is that if it doesn't smell and/or taste like ink (that's how it smells to me, though people say phenol), then it's edible.

Yeah there is no prominent yellow staining. In the 7th pic I scraped it and that's about as yellow as it gets. Same with the stem and inside the stem. I smoked all my life and weed most of it. My smeller kinda thrashed. Kind of smells like a new leather shoe. I guess.

Thanks a lot e-1. My girlfriend smelled the skin off of these, and then smelled store bought buttons. She says they smell the same. She's an accountant and loves the smell of felt pens. Said she would DEFINITELY know if it smelled like ink. Curious what's protocol for further testing or tasting? Best books or preferably website? or just eat a half a small one and wait a few days? Appreciate any help, thanks

I would fry a little bit of one and see if it's palatable.

I took a thin middle slice from an 1 1/4" size and fried it in oil. No butter or seasonings. I cooked it where it shrunk almost half. It was delicious and I wanted to eat more. I spit it out and it was very yellow. A couple minutes after I spit it out I started getting a bitter taste. Not bad and I think butter and salt would overrule it. Is bitter a bad sign? Thanks for helping. I trust the chants and morels I find and would really like to add a couple new ones. These groups are starting to open and some are 5" across

Also you mentioned Agaricus xanthodermus Yellow stainer. The info I read said they stain mainly along the rim. These are very bright yellow in that area. I'll add a couple pics.
