I call pouring boiling water in a bucket of wood pellets pasteurization.  Seems like the OP's method is similar and looks like it worked just fine. Sure, it's not true pasteurization by any means, but when using wood pellets with reishi, there's really no need for true pasteurization.
Nice looking grow so far!

I didn't say it wouldn't work.  I do the same thing but I don't call it Pasteurization.  Would you pour boiling water over cow shit and call it good?

No, I wouldn't pour boiling water over cow shit and call it good.  I think I was pretty clear in recommending the method specifically for wood pellets.  Sorry if using the word pasteurization offended ya there, but I did specify that it WASN'T true pasteurization.

Next thing you know we got noobs microwaving manure and wondering what happened when it tricks out.

Haha, I don't visit mush cult much anymore, but I do believe that (or something like it) has happened on more than one occasion if I remember.  A search would probably reveal dozens...

Some people don't bother to do enough research so it's kinda their fault if they do something like that and it fails.

Was thinking the same LOL

I use the microwave quite a bit. I've used it to fractional sterilize plugs. I use on agar. Recently to break up freshly sterilized grain jars. For the hobby grower I think it is a great tool.

Those are beautiful antlers you have there!

Was this your first experience with cultivating mushrooms?

I've noticed the wood loving species would cost me about 1/2 as much as the grain ones.

That last statement could be a little confusing to some...

Let me sum it up as best I can and I will let anyone correct me where I'm wrong:

There are primary decomposers (ie; wood-loving species), and secondary decomposers (ie; dung-loving species - called secondary decomposers because an animal has already partially decomposed the substrate, and then shit it out - mushrooms come secondary to that, to decompose it further).

I've never heard of "grain loving species".  Yes there are some species you can grow directly off grain, but no mushroom in the wild grows entirely on concentrated sterilized grains, since in the wild that condition simply doesn't really exist.

Grains can, and usually are, used as SPAWN, for pretty much any species.  The spawn then is usually mixed in with a less nutritious substrate, whether it's wood, manure, or other - that's when we start calling them "wood-loving", or "dung-loving", etc.  Pretty much all mushroom mycelium will grown on grains, that's why we use grains as spawn.  After that, you have to spawn them to the substrate they naturally would grow in in the wild, again wood vs. manure or compost or other.

So that's why I'm not sure where you got your cost comparison from - is there something you're trying to grow on straight grain?

Neato.  And, as asked, you don't supplement?

I won't answer for the OP, but when using a 2:1 spawn rate with reishi there's absolutely no need to supplement with bran.  Your supplementation is in your spawn.

Sure, it's not true pasteurization by any means, but when using wood pellets with reishi, there's really no need for true pasteurization.  Especially with that high of a spawn rate, and the contaminant fighting ability of reishi.

Nice looking grow so far!

I didn't know that, thank you.

Sorry, my post was quite unclear with little direction.

I was essentially comparing the cost of using grains as spawn versus using wood pellets as substrate during bulk grows. In the processes I had the home cultivator goggles on and called the manure loving species grain loving! A confusing, and unnecessary comparison.

Thank you for clarifying.

No this was not my first grow and for reshi i do not supliment. I use 2/1 sub/spawn ratio/if it reaches temps of 140-160 internally and is maintained for 30 min idgaf if you do it by stuffing it in your bum if thats the effect you get then YES I CALL IT PASTURIZED..
