pin location
    #23762074 - 10/22/16 07:56 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

One of my four cakes seems to be getting a lot of pins at the bottom edge of the cylinder. I'm assuming they're taking to this spot cuz they like it there, but any idea if there is a negative side to this location and/or crowdedness?

Is there any reason to sort of bolster the cake to lift that edge up?
The one positive of the location is they have more headspace to grow upward (This is a pretty shallow SGFC).
Also, every picture i've seen has one of the flat sides of the cylinder cake as the base. Any reason why this is the standard, rather than having a cake on it's side, exposing more surface area to the air? - Yes I know it could roll if on its side, but with some minor ingenuity this seems avoidable.
Thanks, as per usual.

Leave em be they're smarter at growing mushrooms than any of us are. They pin where they think they'll be most successful. They'll find room to grow

I did my first and last batch of PF cakes around 8 months ago, and had this one odd pin close to the same location as yours that I thought I had to adjust.  Turned out that pin produced the biggest fruit with a base almost as big as the cake itself.

It's common for mushrooms to grow from the bottom edge of cake. The humidity is higher in that area. You wanted to grow mushrooms and they are growing, so all is right in the little world of your fruiting chamber.

It's fine to place a cake on its side during fruiting. You say the cake will have more exposure to air that way, which is true, but you're also experiencing firsthand that cakes like to pin where they have a little bit less exposure to air. When viewed through that lens, maybe it's best to place cakes in the traditional way.
