good places to live

my family and i are planning on moving somewhere new around the 1st of january, however we are having trouble finding cool towns that aren't ridiculously expensive. any thoughts, anyone?
we like the mountains and the forest. and we don't like cities.

puna is cheap,but there is not many jobs,the locals can be dicks how about chico,decent rental prices but really there is hardly any cheap nice places anymore Too many computer and financial services millionares buying up all the nice spots

Flagstaff/ sedona area is pretty cool with awesome scenery and hiking and just a short drive from the grand canyon.

what part of socal? ive been around san diego a bit, and didn't really care for it. budget is like 1500 MAXX.
i lived in tuscon for like 2 years. it was gorgeous and everything, but i don't think that the desert is for me.

Sedona is desert but Flagstaff has the biggest ponderosa pine forest in the world and the town smells like vanilla half the year.

I love the Bay Area. It is expensive, but the higher pay makes up for it and there is plenty of work to go around

Its awesome that your family is moving together. Too often one person moves far away and gets isolated from their real home (where their familiy is). I'm sure you'll make the decision thats right for everyone!
