Smooth cap with a tan color, cream color gills, rust color spore print, no veil, thick non-hollow stem.

Any other info needed just ask.

Pluteus sp.

If there was a volva present it might be a Volvariella sp. as well.  But given that you found these growing from wood, I lean more towards Pluteus.

There is a general key on mushroomexpert you can use to try and narrow down species if your curious.

Maybe I am reading this site wrong. When I use the key from the main site it is narrowing TI a gymnopolus geneous. How did you narrow it to pluteus sp.?

Adding spore print pic...

General appearance, Habitat, gill color, and gill attachment all lead me to Pluteus.  I'm also assuming the spore color your seeing is what mycologists call "pink" (which is more of a brown-salmon I suppose).  Rust colored spores have much more orange to them.

I am getting a little lost because I don't have a microscope. When I look up edibility
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pluteus

This site (I know Wikipedia) and several others claim it is both edible and psychoactive but usually it is one or the other.

The descriptions are correct 100% to the geneous.

By the way spore print is salmon brown  was confusing with rusty but it has more of a pink hue especially looking at them on the gills.

Bookmarked that site by the way. I was using the keys wrong but this will help a lot while out mushroom hunting.

To my knowledge there are no toxic Pluteus species.  The psychoactive members (P. salicinus for example) seem to be fairly uncommon here in the USA.

As for edibility, I have eaten Pluteus cervinus - and was not impressed.  I don't know much about other Pluteus species.  Perhaps someone else has more input.
