Halfway thru this first book and it is just as good if not far superior to the show.
I'm about 24 hours in and over halfway through.
I've read so much in the last month I'd swear I was in jail. This will make the 9th book in 3 weeks
Waiting on Corey Taylor's books in the mail. I used to sit watching my mailbox waiting on dope to come in and now I sit around waiting on books

In my opinion A Song of Ice and Fire is hands down the greatest example of modern story telling. I've been reading them since before the HBO series and I was actually very angry when I first heard there would be a TV adaptation. How wrong I was, the TV show continues to blow me out of the water, it's simply astonishing how well it's put together. I honestly wouldn't expect GRRM to reliese the next book in the series until after the television show is over.

the books are imo significantly better than the show, especially the later seasons where the dialogue goes to shit and the sand snakes.... god they fucked up dorne so bad
not my favorite fantasy series but its up there, top 5 probably. Amazing as far as plot and all that go but it doesn't hit me the way some very rare books do, like Earthsea or lately the Kingkiller Chronicles.
as a show I give it like 7.5/10, as a book series 8.5/10

Well I Seen the show first and was hooked cause I'm a sucker for excessive violence. I binge watched 5 seasons last year and then figured out that it was a book series as well (OK I'm uncultured I admit). The first book is so fucking good it's almost unreal.
That said Earthsea and King killer chronicles u say? Those shall be next. I got three Corey Taylor books to read after GoT. Am Also in the middle of Narco-nomics how to run a drug cartel. The cartel book got sidelined when I got GoT tho

Lucky for me these books are 600+ pages each and on barely started. By the time I read them all along with all the other shit I have slated to read and watch the newest seasons of the GoT show, a new book may be out.
I was the guy that never read shit, then I went to jail not that long ago and realized, in shackles with no commissary, that books are cool.

kingkiller is great, and more modern. Earthsea is my favorite series but it took until my second read on book 1 to really 'get' it. Its rather distant and poetic in its prose so I think that puts people off. Also the 4th book, my favorite, was controversial to some fantasy fans because it largely did away with magic and focused a lot on peasant life, and specifically a repeatedly sexually abused child so it was a bit different lets say (imo the best one though)
kingkiller is more entertaining though, and is great too (though the final book still isn't out)

I recently started reading A Storm of Swords. I wanted to read the books again before I finally decide to watch the tv series. I had thought maybe, just maybe by the time I finish all the books, and then work my way through all six seasons, that maybe GRRM would finish then next book maybe.
but probably not
At the rate he's going he'll be dead before he finishes the series

That's nuts. Like, how do you just lose something like that.
He was probably unhappy with it.
Though I can imagine it would be pretty difficult to write up a book after the TV show already branched off. He's gotta decide to keep some continuity or to break the mold I guess. If he keeps with it, he'd have to invent all kinds of details and his writing style might be hampered. If he was to split from where the show went, he'd really be better off not watching the show or taking part in the scripts, which I imagine he already had some say in finishing the story line on (I think the storyline is basically finished and awaiting creation at this point).

I think he really is sick of the series at this point and part of him hopes he'll keel over before he has to finish it. Maybe he knows deep down his planned ending is lame, and hes too ashamed to let the public see

I'm calling shenanigans on that. A project that big, and with that much time invested in must have copies, and backups, and whathaveyou.

I agree He continually makes vague excuses about being busy with other projects, and he makes even more vague progress reports about how the book is coming along -- I call shenanigans on that too. I think he's tired of writing the story. I think it got too big and unwieldy for him to find a clean way to end it that wont take another 5 or 6 books

Cool. I think I'll try earthsea first.

Today I voyage to the library for King killer and earth sea
I'm about done with GoT book 1 but my podunk library has a two week wait on them, minimum. I was underestimating the quality of the series when I only requested book one. How silly of me.

I started reading the books when they first came out, which was a long time ago. Back in the 90s. I've always loved reading, and was always way ahead of my age when it came to books. As I recall, I was about 12 when I first stumbled across A Game of Thrones in the book/magazine section of a grocery store & bugged my parents to get it for me. Frankly, this is an area where technology has been negative.....reading was always one of my favorite past times, and ever since my first iPod touch, I barely pick up books anymore. That sucks honestly.
But I digress.... I've always gotten sucked into the alternate world of books....and none more than the Song of Ice & Fire series. I lived & breathed it. When I wasn't reading, and was doing chores & shit.....or in class I'd fantasize that I was a part of that world. Everyone I knew was. I'd be a lord, there would be wars & whatever girl I had a crush on at the time would become my wife. I often thought how cool it would be for the books to be made into movies. So the HBO show is a dream come true....and they've done a real good job imo. Not only that, but George is so damn slow about writing these books. I'm talking several years between them.....and each time it gets longer. You folks that discovered this series with the show have no idea how much of a bitch it was to be sucked into this world, and have to wait years & years to see what happens next. With the show, we're progressing so much faster.
