What is your personality type?
    #23757615 - 10/21/16 10:33 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

It's kind of fun to learn what your personality type is, by using the Typology Test based on Jung's and Meyers & Briggs' personality type theory.  The test only takes five minutes and can be found here:

http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/jtypes2.asp

I think it would be fun to see the results of some other PSP regulars, so if you're game, try it out.

I am an INTJ.

INTJ:

Quote:

It’s lonely at the top, and being one of the rarest and most strategically capable personality types, INTJs know this all too well. INTJs form just two percent of the population, and women of this personality type are especially rare, forming just 0.8% of the population – it is often a challenge for them to find like-minded individuals who are able to keep up with their relentless intellectualism and chess-like maneuvering. People with the INTJ personality type are imaginative yet decisive, ambitious yet private, amazingly curious, but they do not squander their energy.

...

A paradox to most observers, INTJs are able to live by glaring contradictions that nonetheless make perfect sense – at least from a purely rational perspective. For example, INTJs are simultaneously the most starry-eyed idealists and the bitterest of cynics, a seemingly impossible conflict. But this is because INTJ types tend to believe that with effort, intelligence and consideration, nothing is impossible, while at the same time they believe that people are too lazy, short-sighted or self-serving to actually achieve those fantastic results. Yet that cynical view of reality is unlikely to stop an interested INTJ from achieving a result they believe to be relevant.

used to get INTP as a result, but more recently was getting INFP. from reading the descriptions of both, I feel INFP is a better fit, at least now. I know some people say that personality type is static throughout life, but imo personality can be malleable. I think it's even possible for an introvert to become an extrovert and vice versa, though it probably isn't too common.

I agree that a person's personality can change, or can be changed, but that indeed it is rare for a genuine transformation to take place.

ENTJ

I should be a CEO.  Or a consultant.  I can always figure out exactly what a company or people are doing wrong and know exactly what they should do to fix it.  For some reason I'm trying to get into medicine.  I guess I also like being an expert working at the top of their game.

INTP, but only slightly T. Like deff, I've found my T turning toward F over time.

What I find more revealing is the difficulty I have in answering some of the questions. Perhaps this is due to an over-analysis of the question, but I also find that my ideals for personal growth and balance draw me towards the middle of some spectra over time. The me of 15 years ago might have had more polarized answers.

INTP, “THE LOGICIAN”
Quote:

The INTP personality type is fairly rare, making up only three percent of the population, which is definitely a good thing for them, as there's nothing they'd be more unhappy about than being "common". INTPs pride themselves on their inventiveness and creativity, their unique perspective and vigorous intellect. Usually known as the philosopher, the architect, or the dreamy professor, INTPs have been responsible for many scientific discoveries throughout history.

INFP. I also had the T-F switch sometime in my early adulthood like others here as well. Maybe it's not just an anomaly with the INTPs...?

Yeah, I'm in the middle on a lot of them too.  I've always thought on many questionnaires of this sort that I would give an answer not offered, or that the question was pretty flawed.

Somehow I doubt you'd fit the description of an INTP Kurt.

Honestly I used to be a fuzzy feelings type and I still am to some extent but I don't express it to a great deal because in the past I've experienced serious heartbreak.

All I can say is I took the tests and evidently the glove would fit.

Maybe introverted types are sometimes paradoxical, for not as a rule expressing the way they are?

I certainly felt like and tried to be an INTP when I was a youngling, but I don't think that makes it so. Types can change, but it is very rare to actually stay changed.

And remember that just cause a test said so doesn't make it so either. When my father took the test he thought he was an INFJ when he is really the inverse, an ENFP. As with most things, the more you understand it the more accurate it is. I definitely understand ESTJs a lot because of empathizing and researching my opposite.

Just as with the Kiersey test, this one also gives me INTJ. I am unequivocally NOT an INTJ. Both tests are inaccurate on the J-P axis. I have a certain expertise with the MBTI, having used it since 1980 in grad school in a research project under the supervision of a Zurich-trained Jungian analyst. I administered and hand-scored 1000 MBTIs back then. I am an INTP, as is my wife. The MBTI is the original instrument, 126 A or B items (no uncertainty allowed, it's got to be 49% vs.51% for any given item), and none of these spin-offs have ever been accurate relative to the MBTI.

When I look at some of the different write-ups to be found on google or at wikipedia, it seems accurate that I am an INTJ.  But if you look above, you'll see several INFPs who used to score as INTPs.  Whatever that means.  I take your point, yeah, the linked test is in no way scientific.  Fun anyway.

I considered myself an introvert for 25 years.  Now I realize I'm an extrovert.

It's not that I "changed".  Anxiety, depression, and addiction can mask our true selves.

I think there is a bit of danger when proclaiming oneself a certain "personality type"

As we develop and evolve, we need to be prepared and willing to be a different person.

ISTP; I knew that I was introvert. Can't remember what the rest meant. I know the synopsis was "cool onlooker". (that kind of pinpointed the best and worst of me)  They said it was their first graduate cohort ever (87 or 88) that was majority introvert.

Environmental factors (ie, in-breeding [most of us stem from in-breeding if you go down the genetic line far enough) leads to ~ Genetic factors (ie, lower cognitive function of mind due to genetic disorders -- and variability of genetic variance) leads to ~ eventually improvement of Environmental factors, such as educational, sociological, and domestic, feasibility in the attainment of good cognitive abilities, leading to the Flynn effect

seems to be cogent. (sorry for off-topic post, brainstorming)

I totally agree. I think that MBTI should be called a character test because it really isn't your personality, it's how your mind processes the world around you. Many INFPs seek to understand the world with logic, empathy, and intuition while INTPs instincually process the world of logical fluidly. I think most INFPs aspire to be as logical as they can while INTPs don't really have to try. I think that this is why many INFPs think they are Ts becauze any smart one earnestly wants to be. INTPs can sometimes lack the ability to empathize with others needs from them emotionally.

The difference between T and F types is subtle, but unmistakable when you can recognize it. T and F types can express their emotions and even extrovert them while still being an introvert. The real difference between all the types is realizing what you process first in any split second situation. Do you think logically first then feel or feel it then think logically about it?

ISTPs first approach each situation with a flexible logical and then second sense the situation unlike INTPs who use their intuition. ISTPs are said to have great reflexes, Bruce Lee is a famous one.

The ENTP personality type is the ultimate devil's advocate, thriving on the process of shredding arguments and beliefs and letting the ribbons drift in the wind for all to see. Unlike their more determined Judging (J) counterparts, ENTPs don't do this because they are trying to achieve some deeper purpose or strategic goal, but for the simple reason that it's fun. No one loves the process of mental sparring more than ENTPs, as it gives them a chance to exercise their effortlessly quick wit, broad accumulated knowledge base, and capacity for connecting disparate ideas to prove their points.

Just to echo what a few other people were saying, the idea is cool, but the test is often pretty faulty. When I actually took the test it put me like 50/50 between J and P, but after reading what those letters affect, I don't really identify with the J at all

The other thing I think most people overlook is that these types are really just generalizations of large groups, for example very few people who would consider themselves INTP's would agree with every aspect of what makes the model "INTP", it's really just a helpful approximation.

yeah and I would add that I think it's possible that if one reads about their type and identifies with it, they could potentiate those characteristics in their being. I don't think it's best to be too tightly defined by any system that way as it might limit your spontaneous expression. What we are is beyond categorization, though they can be helpful at times I think

When I was growing up I thought thought of myself as an INTP who aspired to be an ENTP but was really an INFP all along. XD You Gandalfs of the world always inspire me with your debate skills, Jon Stewart is very likely an ENTP.

On a side note, did you know Stephen Colbert took a valid MB test on his show?

So the story goes first he put up a false Character, "portrayed as a larger than life character", on the Colbert Report, comedy central.

This article says that people thought that when he was truly himself, he would be ENTP (like you say of John Stewart) when actually he was an INFP.

Anyway, just some food for thought.

INTP.

Wasn't sure if my answers were 100% honest, so I took the test once again with slight changes.

That's interesting, because my cousin actually met him and hung out with him backstage one day after he did the Colbert Report, and she said in person he was completely different than his onstage persona.  I can therefore confirm your comments.

I am an ENTP (according to tests and function descriptions), btw MBTI is more about functions than just plain personality types. If you are interested into this stuff, you should definetly check THIS CHANNEL.

I intuitively reverse engineered the test and was able to hit 3 out of 3 preselected personalities......  What kind of personality type designs personality tests?  I think I have a knack for that.

To me it's silly easy to see which questions are asking whether you are introverted or extroverted, intuitive or sensing, thinking or feeling, or perceiving or judgmental.  If there's something revealing about being less interested in my own personality and more interested in how the damned test works, that might suggest something about my personality .

Haha, wasn't it timothy leary who escaped from prison by manipulating the prisoner personality test (which he helped design) to label him as a "non-threat" so he could get a job outside watering flowers?

I also see how each answer leads to each personality, but meh.

Mix of INTP and INFP. When I was young, I was an ENTP. Matured into an INTP - spent most of my time on the computer doing computer stuff..

About 7 years ago, personality changed into INFP. Bit of an absent-minded professor/artist/writer.

Trying to become more like an INFJ.. stepping up my organization game. But I think I'll always truly be an INTP/INFP.

The INFJ personality type is very rare, making up less than one percent of the population, but they nonetheless leave their mark on the world. As Diplomats (NF), they have an inborn sense of idealism and morality, but what sets them apart is the accompanying Judging (J) trait – INFJs are not idle dreamers, but people capable of taking concrete steps to realize their goals and make a lasting positive impact.
INFJs tend to see helping others as their purpose in life, but while people with this personality type can be found engaging rescue efforts and doing charity work, their real passion is to get to the heart of the issue so that people need not be rescued at all.

INFJs indeed share a very unique combination of traits: though soft-spoken, they have very strong opinions and will fight tirelessly for an idea they believe in. They are decisive and strong-willed, but will rarely use that energy for personal gain – INFJs will act with creativity, imagination, conviction and sensitivity not to create advantage, but to create balance. Egalitarianism and karma are very attractive ideas to INFJs, and they tend to believe that nothing would help the world so much as using love and compassion to soften the hearts of tyrants.

"Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness."
    Martin Luther King

INFJs find it easy to make connections with others, and have a talent for warm, sensitive language, speaking in human terms, rather than with pure logic and fact. It makes sense that their friends and colleagues will come to think of them as quiet Extroverted types, but they would all do well to remember that INFJs need time alone to decompress and recharge, and to not become too alarmed when they suddenly withdraw. INFJs take great care of other’s feelings, and they expect the favor to be returned – sometimes that means giving them the space they need for a few days.

Looks like I'm changing over time.  I used to find a high preference for INTJ, but I'm definitely softening up as I age.  I'll say I'm definitely less introverted than I used to be, too.

You have slight preference of Introversion over Extraversion (16%)
You have moderate preference of Intuition over Sensing (41%)
You have slight preference of Thinking over Feeling (9%)
You have marginal or no preference of Perceiving over Judging (3%)

I think the MBTI is oversimplified. Several traits are better for understanding personalities. (Big 5) The quadrant works for perspectives though. (Interior/Exterior+Singular/Plural)

Oh, and I'm an INTJ. :bobdobbs:

Quote:

The ENFP personality is a true free spirit. They are often the life of the party, but unlike Explorers, they are less interested in the sheer excitement and pleasure of the moment than they are in enjoying the social and emotional connections they make with others. Charming, independent, energetic and compassionate, the 7% of the population that they comprise can certainly be felt in any crowd.

More than just sociable people-pleasers though, ENFPs, like all their Diplomat cousins, are shaped by their Intuitive (N) quality, allowing them to read between the lines with curiosity and energy. They tend to see life as a big, complex puzzle where everything is connected – but unlike Analysts, who tend to see that puzzle as a series of systemic machinations, ENFPs see it through a prism of emotion, compassion and mysticism, and are always looking for a deeper meaning.

ENFPs are fiercely independent, and much more than stability and security, they crave creativity and freedom.

Many other types are likely to find these qualities irresistible, and if they've found a cause that sparks their imagination, ENFPs will bring an energy that oftentimes thrusts them into the spotlight, held up by their peers as a leader and a guru – but this isn't always where independence-loving ENFPs want to be. Worse still if they find themselves beset by the administrative tasks and routine maintenance that can accompany a leadership position. ENFPs' self-esteem is dependent on their ability to come up with original solutions, and they need to know that they have the freedom to be innovative – they can quickly lose patience or become dejected if they get trapped in a boring role.

I was E--P, in that I was extraverted (uncommon for an Internet forum) and perceiving and not judgmental.

On the Sensing/Intuition and Thinking/Feeling axes I was pretty much in the middle, so there were four types that more or less suited me.

INTJ

I read the description and it was like mind reading.

Although... You just told them most of what you can tell about yourself, atleast enough to make them choose the right words for you.

Still... Props, it's hands down the most accurate description about my life I've ever gotten.

Yeah, while it's not a scientifically rigorous test, it was definitely accurate in my case and apparently also for many of the posters in this thread.  It's fun, whatever its level of sophistication.

Nothing good can become of taking a personality survey and becoming labeled or influenced or both.  No thanks.  I am not a "type".

ENFP - description is spot on I reckon:

Quote:

ENFPs are both "idea"-people and "people"-people, who see everyone and everything as part of a cosmic whole. They want to both help and to be liked and admired by other people, on both an individual and a humanitarian level. This is rarely a problem for the ENFP, as they are outgoing and warm, and genuinely like people. Some ENFPs have a great deal of zany charm, which can ingratiate them to more stodgy types in spite of their unconventionality.

ENFPs often have strong, if sometimes surprising, values and viewpoints. They tend to try to use their social skills and contacts to persuade others gently (though enthusiastically) of the rightness of these views; this sometimes results in the ENFP neglecting their nearest and dearest while caught up their efforts to change the world.

ENFPs can be the warmest, kindest, and most sympathetic of mates; affectionate, demonstrative, and spontaneous. Many in relationships with an ENFP literally say, "They light up my life." But there is usually a trade-off: the partner must be willing to deal with the practical and financial aspects of the relationship, and the ENFP must be allowed the freedom to follow their latest path, whatever that entails.

For some ENFPs, relationships can be seriously tested by their short attention spans and emotional needs. They are easily intrigued and distracted by new friends and acquaintances, forgetting their older and more familiar emotional ties for long stretches at a time. And the less mature ENFP may need to feel they’re the constant center of attention, to confirm their image of themselves as a wonderful and fascinating person.

In the workplace, ENFPs are pleasant and friendly, and interact in a positive and creative manner with both their co-workers and the public. ENFPs are also a major asset in brainstorming sessions; follow-through on projects can be a problem, however. ENFPs do get distracted, especially if another interesting issue comes along. They also tend towards procrastination, and dislike performing small, uninteresting tasks. ENFPs are most productive when working in a group with a few Js to handle the details and the deadlines.

ENFPs are friendly folks. Most are really enjoyable people. Some of the most soft-hearted people are ENFPs.

ENFPs have what some call a "silly switch." They can be intellectual, serious, all business for a while, but whenever they get the chance, they flip that switch and become CAPTAIN WILDCHILD, the scourge of the swimming pool, ticklers par excellence. Sometimes they may even appear intoxicated when the "switch" is flipped.

After reading what Markos said though I now wanna take the more accurate one he suggested.

Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.

INTP

Even though peoples' results tend to change throughout their lives, the tests are very useful as a tool describe someone's behavior, and what their response to a given situation is likely to be. :strokebeard:

ESTP fits me well enough as a baseline for my ego. My Spirit however is the one that counts. ESTP is probably it's polar opposite. I just like to see people happy even if I have to sacrifice my own.

INTP

After looking through the details that seems close for me.  This part is spot on (you could ask my girlfriend, it annoys the shit out of her)  "INTPs and Logic -- One of the tipoffs that a person is an INTP is his or her obsession with logical correctness. Errors are not often due to poor logic -- apparent faux pas in reasoning are usually a result of overlooking details or of incorrect context."

And OP, anyway you can add a poll to your post.  I know it is a bit late now, but would be nice to see if people go back and vote.

Instead of a poll I have tallied the results so far, which are the following:

INTP:  11
INTJ:  9
INFP:  4
ENTP:  3
INFJ:  2
ESTP:  2
ENFP:  2
ENFJ:  1
ENTJ:  1
ISTP:  1
ISTJ:  1
ESFP:  1
ISFJ:  0
ISFP:  0
ESTJ:  0
ESFJ:  0

Clearly, INTPs and INTJs constitute the majority of us here at the Shroomery -- by a wide margin.  The rest of respondents form a fairly even distribution, with INFP in third place overall.  ISFJ, ISFP, ESTJ and ESFJ are not represented at all.

when i took this test the first time, many moons ago, and when i had friends (lol) i was classed an ESFJ.

now i'm classed as INTJ, with 1 % in some of the traits, leading to the classification that the rest of the IN's traits may and can be applicable.

sweet deal. i'm sorta like a cross-over between Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, Emperor Palpatine, and...Jar Jar Binks. :lolsy:

I think in the general population it actually is pretty rare.  I think one primary factor that it is so prevalent here is that the INTJ and INTP types of personality are the sort that would use computers and frequent internet message boards more than most.

Are you a Borg?

I knew that T types would be more common than F here. Most S types wouldn't find talking on a forum like this a good use of time. Kinda impossible to believe that your type turned from ESFJ to INTJ. You sound more like an ESTJ to me.

I personally think that many people want to be a type that is more rare because they think that it makes them more interesting. A lot of ego tripping. Any type without an ego is interesting to me, I don't care if you are an ESFJ or ISTP. The types only represent your cognitive function, not how cool your personality is. It does give some pointers to what personality is likely, and then people just make an assumption and run with it.

In the case of Myers Briggs, knowing how someone tends to behave can be helpful for interacting with them.

Someone who is more T (Thinking)-oriented, for example, will be better swayed by logic than emotion in a debate- and vice-versa for someone who is an F (Feeling) type. A more "T" individual is also much more likely to tolerate having fun poked at them, or more insensitive jokes.

It's just a good reference to have about how to interact with someone.
