What's difference between Coco Coir and Coco Peat?
    #23757446 - 10/21/16 09:30 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I searched all over this forum no luck to find the answer.

I'll prepare CVG mixture and need to know which I should use.

Coir is pure coconut husks.  Coir peat is a mix of coir and Spaghnum peat moss

I just started a journal using bulk shredded coir husk and coir. Small amounts but still viable and not at all controlled lol

My suggestion is to look at the details of what you buy. It should have the ingredients in your substrate listed.  A mix of coir and peat is okay, but I'd rather use pure coir.  Don't get any with fertilizer in it already.

Mix up the coir and some fine grade vermiculite at a 70/30 ratio.  Throw in a little gypsum and you'll be good to go.  You can get coconut coir at many garden or reptile stores, just prep your substrate and pastuerize (or sterilize, or cook it, or whatever.  Coir is very versatile.) Then toss it all together with a few jars of clean spawn in a monotub and be happy.

You don't have to use pure coir either.  Sometimes I buy a 50lb bag of moisture control hydrate coir and peat mixture, pasteurized it actually works great when mixed with a bit of vermiculite to correct field capacity and throwing in a couple handfuls of granular gypsum.  You can also buy what's called "jiffy mix seed starter" made by miracle grow.  It makes for a great casing substrate, which is also coir and peat.

I wouldn't have thought it would contain regular peat moss. What brand(s) was this that you saw?

I think we need to know the brand that is being talked about here.

I think it's called hydrate.  Not sure the brand, think I got it at Walmart.  It did work great though.  I did see the official term coir peat is just describing a "peat-like" coir, but I recall them calling this brand of coir peat being a mix of coir and peat moss.

Yep that's it.  I believe it's on the ingredients of the bag though, but perhaps I'm mistaken, I don't have a bag of this currently.

I usually check ingredients before I buy anything, labeling is sometimes inconsistent.

Yeah, I could imagine it could be listed as an ingredient. The product is called hydrate though, obviously a brand name and clearly says its a mixture. From your first post it sounded like you were saying any product called "coir peat" would likely be a mixture like this. I think if a product is labelled as "coir peat" it would be coconut based, with maybe some additives, but not a mix with substantial amounts of regular peat moss.

Yeah, you are right.  I've looked up several other examples as well, many do call it coir peat, as confusing or misleading as that may be, even for myself.  I was just suggesting to read the ingredients before buying as I've been through all different kinds of bagged substrates, and many of those labels we're very misleading until reading the actual ingredient list.

For example, many of these substrates contain additional products (like the one above) only identify as "forest products".  I assume many kinds of bark, organic material, leaves, or other forest composts.    Any kind of pure coir I buy generally comes in dehydrated brick form, not in a bag, which is what I've found is a majority mixture of a wide gamut of products.

If you were to look at the wiki article I linked on post two or three -you would see that the 'coir peat' terminology you used sort of just means coir.

That being said- be on the lookout for items on sale that have mixtures.

I've always only trusted my pet store's reptile department to get me what I need.

Edit:
In no way do I mean dismay-my reply was not intended for who it was documented as...

No harm intended! Me love you long time!

I pasteurized using an oven bag method and have done at least 10 grows with this type of substrate.  It seems to work very well pasteurized and mixed with verm and gypsum.  Anything that has random "forest products" in it needs pasteurized, otherwise you're probably going to end up with a tub of trich, not mushrooms.

Probably not quite as good as pure coco as I said though.

I used it as a casing layer only ended up with trich a few times but it was probably due to other shit the myc would fully consume it and it just looked really unhealthy ... i ran it on maybe 20 tubs when the mycena popped up and pasty and nate flooded my ears that it was not a good idea

I have not yet had one problem with using as a substrate.  Though as I said I pasteurized pretty well, and was pretty careful during the spawn runs.  Not pasteurizing this product is just asking for failure, whether it's used for casing or bulk.

I only use this stuff when my supplier is out of coir blocks.  There would be absolutely no reason to get this stuff if you had coir and have some jiffy to case with.
