Opportunity to move to Thailand or The Philippines
    #23755803 - 10/20/16 07:03 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I feel like my life has stagnated over the last year or so, same city same friends... same everything pretty much. I feel like I need a change of scenery. I was chilling at a dive shop this morning where one of my friends work, he was telling me about two internship opportunities that are currently open to certified rescue divers. In exchange for working for a dive shop in either Australia, Thailand or the Philippines you get multiple months of free training in a variety of advanced diving specialities + dive pretty much every day assisting instructors. To me, that sounds like paradise.

I have the financials in place to live comfortably for about a year in both Asian countries, but it just seems like a big jump. On the plus side, it would be incredibly fun, and my gf is returning to the Philippines after christmas, so I could continue to be with her while doing something I love. Additionally, I don't have a location dependent job. I can code and develop websites/software anywhere in the world.

However, I'm aware that I'm viewing this situation through rose tinted glasses. I'm not looking to be talked out of it, just get input on some of the consequences I haven't thought about. A major downside are the strict drug penalties in both prospective countries, but I can spend months sober without a problem.

I could rent out my apartment while I'm away and there would be no need to go apartment hunting and refurnish on return, I'm on really good terms with my landlady so that wouldn't be a problem.

All of my college classes are online.

It's just a big decision you know? What should I do oh wise shroomery? Take a leap of faith?

I would say go for it! If you aren't worried about avoiding drugs or being very very cautious should you choose to use any there it could be amazing.

If you do choose the Philippines it would be wise to avoid drugs entirely I would say. They can be fun but not worth losing your life over.

Is your GF from the Philippines? If so she could help introduce you to the culture. Either way I imagine it will be a major culture shock but could be just what you need.

What classes are you taking online?

--------------------
Don't worry about me, I've got all that I need. And I'm singing my song to the sky

You know how it feels, With the breeze of the sun in your eyes. Not minding that time's passing by

I've got all and more, My smile, just as before. Is all that I carry with me

I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free

Yeah, no way I'm using illicit drugs in the Philippines . If anything I'll just get a prescription drug hookup and/or stick to liquor.

Yeah, she's from there and is bilingual. It seems like a really interesting culture and I've never been to the Philippines before. The cost of living is about 1/4 of what it is the US and that includes eating out, drinks, taxis, clubs etc...

A course on game theory from Stanford and a course on theoretical physics from the Higher School of Economics in Russia, combined it's only 10-25 hrs a week of studying.

They are super religious and will give you their last bowl of rice just to see a smile on your face.

Depending on where you live it is much, much cheaper than that. Im green with envy right now, I hope you take this opportunity. Ask the reasons for 'why not?' Instead of 'why?', its something you could come to regret not doing later on.

Look up some places called El nido, puerto princesa, Boracay, Coron, Siquijor, or if you're a hiker Mt.Maculot & Mt.Batulao. The country is full of environmental gems.

Jeez you weren't kidding about them being super religious, 80%+ roman catholic. Not a deal breaker for me though, by any extent.

That's a good way to look at it, and I can't really think of any reason not to just do it. I'll check out those cities for sure!

Out of curiosity, what's tying you down to Australia?

I would do it but its probably best to avoid the Philippines. They're currently running a state sanctioned purge, which means if anyone wants to kill you all they have to do is sprinkle a bit of crack on your body. No questions, no investigations.

This might be good advice, I read an article today about duarte rebuking ties with the USA and aligning with China and Russia, one might be a target just for being a white american (just my opinion/thinking). Either way, you do have a golden opportunity. I bet you have already made up your mind (just from knowing you in your posts). Good luck whatever you decide, it looks like you have your head on pretty tight. Post your decision!

I also know a guy who knows a guy who went to live in Bali Indonesia. The cops there arrested him and demanded 50,000 dollars or they'd throw him in Bali prison. He ended up paying them.

Oh I still plan on making money dude, I'm launching a porn site next month that I've spent the last five months coding and perfecting -- after it goes online it will be relatively passive income with minimal maintenance.

I definitely don't plan on going to the high crime rate areas, and as far as kidnapping or violent crime goes... I have an imposing build to say the least . Not exactly worth it for kidnappers as I would take a few of those cocksuckers down with me.

Have you thought about learning website design? It's not difficult to pick up the basics and you can create some really cool stuff when you get into to the intermediate level. It's free to learn and pays great money if you know what you're doing. Yah know speaking of the porn site I'm working on I am looking for an intern...

Yeah, that definitely isn't ideal to say the least. It can't be that dangerous though, after going over some information from the state department the majority of the violence seems contained to the Sulu Archipelago. I haven't made up my mind yet but I'm leaning towards going, a little bit of danger is fun to me .

I'm not sure I believe that, it's hard to move 50k just like that.

He was an expat banker somewhere in Asia and bought a vacation house in Bali. 50K aint no thang for those people.

Porn site sounds interesting. Is it like a porn bot that uploads from other websites and you sell adds for the income? Surely you're not competing with the big porn companies and producing content?

I tend to imagine any less developed country in Asia as highly sketch, but I might be wrong for some places. I've been to Thailand which was very sketch imo.

Do it, the largest regrets in life are the opportunities you never took. If your life is stagnating, make a change. My life has been stagnating for a long time and it's starting to fester, and i'm not doing too well. in a position like that, i would jump on it. Thailand has been a dream visit along with peru and the amazon.
