Id request - Gymnopilus luteus?
    #23754926 - 10/20/16 01:41 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Hi everyone,
Found a nice patch of what I think are Gymnopilus luteus (?), about 600g total. Looking for confirmation in my find.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Habitat: Growing on a partially buried tree stump in a yard. Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Gills: See pics.

Stem: Average about 2-3". See pics.

Cap: Range up to 3" diameter. See pics for other details.

Spore print color: Rusty/orange.

Bruising: Some blue bruising on pins and other spots (see pics).

Other information: Smells exactly like other active Gymnopilus I've collected nearby. Color of most of the pics looks a little more orange than they really appear. See the pics of the caps on aluminum foil and the habitat pics to get a better idea of the color, more yellowish than orange. Caespitose.

Anyone? I'd really like to get at TI's opinion if possible. Thanks.

Without a doubt an active Gymnopilus species, very nice.

I am just going to say they're in the Gymnopilus spectabilis species group.

I think unless microscopy is done on your collection to determine which one of the more robust Gymnopilus species you have, it's easier to refer to them as belonging to the spectabilis species group.

Thanks, Fennario. I was pretty certain, but I always like to check with someone else to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Nice bluing on those pins, with many Gymnopilus species it's best to look for bluing/greening on the pins.  Also, the bluing/greening can take a while to show up on some of the larger specimens, if it shows up at all.

I suggest consuming fresh specimens as well, I have found 50-70grms fresh to be a good mental state, almost like an MDMA type feeling, with 100grms and up becoming more visual.  But Gymnopilus have never given me a super visual experience in the way that Psilocybe/Panaeolus have, but still very, very fun.  I know there are some other interesting chems in Gyms which aren't present in other active fungi, and am curious if those are responsible for the different experience they provide.

I find that chopping up fresh specimens, and toss/wash to be the best method for consumption, but everyone is different so maybe tea would work best for you if you plan on performing a bioassay on your collection, for science of course.

I've always liked the tea myself, but maybe I'll give the chop up method a try. It just always seemed like such a massive amount to ingest with gyms that tea seemed easier to stomach. And yes, it does seem to have a different feel than Psilocybes in my experience too.

Thanks for your advice.
