I have no Problem scouting potential spots and woodchips because there is nothing to hide and if someone asks, what I'm doing, I'll just say I'm bored and taking a slow walk.
Actually picking shrooms is harder though. I think I found my first Actives yesterday and crouched down to take a closer look, but the spot was next to a path in a park with people and cars around me so I chickened out and went home.
How do you pick shrooms? I know where and how to hunt but how do you deal with public places and people? Do you have special attire, like safety vests to look less suss or do you just boldly rummage through bushes and collect the shrooms? I am quite paranoid when looking at mushrooms with people near or around me...
Thanks

Take pictures or carry note book. Have other species with you not just actives. Explain your learning to identify mushrooms. If you act normal and just go about your business than nobody thinks twice. But if your trespassing or messing up landscaping or tossing cig butts and disrespecting things. people tend to get upset and investigate your actions and behavior. Bottom line is. It's nobody business what your doing. but always good to have a story. personally. i go back at night if the spot is to sketchy. Ninja style. Just watch were you shine your light.

Another thing, when picking, clip the mushrooms but leave 'em on the ground until you've clipped 'em all and are about to leave. As for your appearance, non-chalance is the most important thing.

So today I found some
Never expected to find Cyans there, I actually just finished my hunt and suddenly there is this bush with woodchip in the middle of a path and a small mushie greeted me. Very happy I found them, but seriously, the spot could have been hidden a little bit better so I could take them without fear.
Thanks to everyone posting here, hope to get some more Opinions and Expereience

Any reason for this? The only situation I can imagine where this would be useful is, if a cop asked what you're doing and he can't prove anything because the shrooms lie on the ground
Thanks!

^ Less time holding an illegal mushroom whilst acting suspicious. If you're not in posession of them you can't be charged.

* In America the law goes like this*
Please look up your local laws regarding psilocybin containing mushrooms.

I used to pick loads of Psilocybe caerulescens/Panaeolus cinctulus in business parks, talk about sketchy because many of those places have their own security and are in the heart of white collar areas. At this point in my life I had a beard and long hair, am not the clean cut stud I am these days.
Anyway, I would carry scissors, the little type, sowing scissors works well to unless the stems are really thick, safer to carry scissors than always pulling out a knife, people see scissors and just think look at this freak cutting mushrooms, you whip out a knife and next thing the frogmen are ascending from the trees and your ass is sitting in Guantanamo bay all over some shrooms.
I always had a camera, and a notebook too, as well as a field guide. The more prepared you appear, the more it looks like you're just some myconerd. Collect other mushrooms too if you can, just know which ones are poisonous if possible, this way if your whole collection is in one bag you're not mixing good shrooms with bad ones. Or if you have only one bag, then you can buy some wax paper too and cut out sections the night before to wrap different genera in, this is probably overkill, but again just a thought. By collecting numerous genera/species, you look like you're not just targeting one type.
I have been asked what I was doing by police, and security, and told them. They looked at me like I was crazy and left, like "why would you want to pick those nasty things, fucking hippie" Don't act like you're doing illegal stuff, don't avoid people, just be natural, and all will be well.
This one day a police officer was sitting in a spot which faced a patch I had been picking from that whole year, I went out and picked mushrooms and knew he was looking at me, but I figured the closer I was to harm, the further I was from danger type thing, which might have been stupid, but man it was a nice haul and I had the power of the shroom gods on my side, or just dumb luck.
One more thing, if you smoke herb, or use any substance which might appear questionable, don't bring it with you, even if it's medical herb.
Oh yeah, one more thing! I find that mesh stuff sacks you take camping to be great for making collections, they're breathable, and can hold loads of shrooms.

How did they find/approach you? Or did you know these guys were there and you decided to pick anyways?

The security was patrolling the area of the business park and he called the police, there were no signs saying I shouldn't be there so I was OK with that, but they just came up and asked what I was doing, guess they thought I was messing with the expensive cars parked in the area, when I told them what I was doing they laughed and said OK then left.
If you are approached, then talk at length about all mushrooms, really show them you're passionate about what you're doing, and explain why you're passionate about what you're doing, the more you know, the more it appears like you're not just there for some nefarious reason. Throw out Latin names, talk about the medicinal property of mushrooms, bore them to death until they are like "shut the fuck up kid" and want to leave because they realize they just stumbled upon one of the crazy people.
You ever been around someone that talks at length about something you're not interested in, that awkward feeling where you just want to get away, well this is what you should do if approached, make them want to get away.

Flashlights are bright theses days. You would be suprised how far they shine. Draws atention. Lot of times i will stash my bag and pick it up on way out once i establish the coast is clear. When you getto your car is when you get stopped around here. Lot more reasons and way eiser to shake you down if a vehicle is involved. Theres infinite reasons to stop a car and only a few to stop a guy in the wood chips. Like DR said. Act normal and be prepared and you will have nothing to worry about. Act sketchy get stopped.
Mesh bags are good for dropping spores as well
