Why Are We On This Earth? 1

"Barefoot Conducts his seminars on his houseboat in Sousalito. It costs a hundred dollars to find out why we are on this earth. You also get a sandwich, but I wasn't hungry that day. John Lennon had just been killed, and I think I know why we are on this earth. It is to find out that everything you love has been taken away from you, probably because of an error in high places rather than by design."
Philip K. Dick, 'The Transmigration of Timothy Archer'
Why are we on this earth? I see no logical reason for existence. Yet I feel, I have the deep rooted sense that I need to do or find out something extraordinary before my existence ends, as the world slowly travels around the sun.
I have yet only seemed to find that the only reason is to reproduce. But there has to be more. There has to be. What is it?

we are on this earth because we became the way we are because we have to survive in order to that's all there is and than when we get tired of we die and we don't care because we don't have anything left to do we also haunt people sometimes to make them and we can be reborn if we didn't like our past lives to everything everywhere everyone

even that is flimsy, at best.
you've found an evolutionary reason to exist, but how far does that "reason" go? you are not your child.

You kind of are your child. Not the same organism, but it's definitely at least some of "you". I don't think there is an overall reason to exist other than to exist. We find and decide on our own reasons for us to exist. Probably the easiest one to find is our inherent instinct to survive.
I think it's best to try and enjoy the crazy ride of life.

having a child increases the likelihood of living past your prime (your due age), even in the most dire circumstances, because of the evolutionary result of wanting to tend to your children until their own death.
that is the foremost positive result in having a child. other than...the obvious: raising a person to behave, hopefully, better than your average person, to propel the human race into further reaches of humanity.

I am surprised to see a trump supporter quoting P.K. Dick
To answer your question I would say the only reason is to exist, to experience, to have a unique life and outlook on the world/ universe...
I like to think we are all just one extended conscious reflection of the universe experiencing itself

there doesn't need to be a reason imo and the more you think about it, how can there be, on a cosmic scale? You get to make your own meaning and that I think is the greatest thing about life.

It's a joke.
Literally.
Your present awareness is everything.
When you step into your present awareness without conditioning, fears, doubts, you step into the infinite mystery.
Awareness can change frequencies.
It's a ride,
just walk on.
The culture is a kind of conspiracy against figuring this out.
It's so beautiful man...

Technically, I'd say the purpose of consciousness is purely biological to increase fitness of the organism by allowing it to better integrate external information to escape predators, catch prey, and coordinate survival with fellow species members. All the fun and cool shit in conciousness is just a fucking accident and "purpose" and "meaning" are artificial concepts created by us. There is no inherent meaning or purpose to the universe. It just is and we just happen to be here experiencing it in a unique way.

well, yes, so then the purpose of life isn't to develop consciousness, life just is, and consciousness just is, and the universe just is. It seems like the simplest and only likely answer to me, why do people hate it so? What's wrong with meaninglessness anyway?

Consciousness existed before life, life is the means of consciousness experiencing itself. You're outlook on the world effects your experience of the world. Be it positive or negative.
1. nothing grim about it 2. that's a completely unsubstantiated claim, that consciousness existed before life. No example of this has ever, or really could ever, be found so it is of the same status as scientology, unicorns and the like: fiction you chose to believe in, without any argumentative basis. You may be right, but you have no reason to believe it as far as I can see

I think life is as meaningful as you make it based on what you fill it with. That's what's beautiful about life is that you have the freedom to make what you want out of it. You should not rely on "god" or religion or whatever to tell you what meaning your life should have.

My belief is pulled from many ancient cultures, which were much more spiritually advanced than our modern society...
For an organic life form to exist and start to grow/evolve, there first had to be consciousness to inhabit/form said organic life.
why though? Why does there 'have to be'? If we need consciousness to explain life, in your wacky cosmology, what explains consciousness? Either way it all boils down to 'who knows' and more accurately perhaps 'we don't know'. Therefore from that vantage point the most logical conclusion is that we can't assign meaning to the cosmos since it is beyond our comprehension, so the only valid meaning is within our own experience, and that can surely be enough, but it ISN'T, in my mind, a meaning that can be extended beyond the self or at most the species

cheers, to be fair I like the idea of immaterial consciousness and the notion that matter is a creation of a collective mind of which we're all part, but I don't have nearly enough evidence to actually 'believe' it, it's my favorite myth tho and who knows might be true

One theory I have is that light is consciousness. Nikola Tesla talked about consciousness being like a radio signal and our brains are the antenna receiving it.
Light just seems like such a fitting metaphor for consciousness and if it was truly some sort of frequency it makes sense it would be the most widespread and fast wave possible. Maybe we will discover something even faster then light eventually but for now that makes perfect sense to me. The theory came to me on DOM staring at the stars with 2 friends, it felt like they were staring back and trying to communicate with us

Why would a Trump supporter not quote or read P.K. Dick? There is a classic example of stereotypical bias based on what is repeated in the media. 'Trump Supporters are all dumb, uneducated hillbillies, a basket of deplorables' repeated over and over until it becomes an ingrained way of thought.
I happen to be one of the most intelligent people on this sight.

A liberating thought can be an acceptance of the absolute purposeless nature of existence. Does a tree have a reason to be or does the game of sport achieve anything? I think no, but they are both exeptionally intricate and beautiful....all without reason. The experience itself apart from the outcomes is what I think it's about (incoming cleche) its not the destination it's the journey.

I know trump and Hillary supporters encompass many demographics of people, I am not that ignorant.
It has nothing to do with the media, my opinion is entirely based on trumps behavior and history.
Playing everything off as media propaganda/ stereotypes and acting smug is exactly the kind of thing Trump would do though
Truly intelligent people don't have to tell other people... They show them by actually being intelligent.

They say when you get the wick wet the lamp shines brighter.
I always make false cognate mistakes when I write (right.) But usually I SPELLED it correctly. (Spelt is only a recent Americanism, from the Brits. But in context they mean 2 different things.)

i'd say more than fucking, it's eating.
if you were to order by way of necessity, eating beats out fucking. i mean, we can survive longer by eating, than we can by fucking...no eating, no living even for a little bit.

also most people eat more times in their life than they fuck, and pre-sexuality we are more food driven obviously, and as we age we tend to revert to food as a focus it seems.
I live mostly to sleep, I could do without eating

ahh, that's interesting...maybe we're on earth mostly to sleep? after all, do we know why we sleep, why we need it? nope. so it could be the reason, the real reason, we're all here, afterall.

get your teleological text books, and get to the telos of the situation, broo.
PS: i am of the honest opinion that people are "here to" record, and narrate the story of humanity.
but this is not a naturalist take on the telos of human existence...it is an informal take on it.

but what then, is the purpose of consciousness?
I find that to be a GREAT question, since I was stating in another thread that most of the time, 90% of our mind is doing subconscious tasks. Then the conscious reflects what is mostly subconscious processing.

well, we are talking 'bout the human telos, not the telos of evolution, and consciousness. of course, these are connected to us humans, but only insofar as they are connected to just about anything and everything else.
save outside of action theory, of course.
if you can't take any actions, you can't have a reason to exist. therefore, at that point, you are merely a constructed asset.

To spread our genes as much as we can as a life form. to evovle as much as we can. To expand our being to outer-space. Inhibit other worlds. To always wonder about what's beyond what we can't touch. Live ourselves through the lives of our children.

We're here to wake up to the true nature of reality, and then to help others realize the same thing, so no being is left in darkness, but everything is illuminated.
All of the crap of this world is put there to deceive us, we're not the clothes we wear, we're not the color of our skin, we're not the number in our bank accounts, we're spirit, and we're free, I just wish people would realize how much love is in this world, and that we never have to be alone.
Much in this life doesn't matters to me, the things which matters to me the most are each and everyone of you, and letting you know that you're loved, and that you're worth it, and that you're never alone, and that together we can make it. I am broken because I can't be like the majority of humanity, I swell with love so much so that it's almost hard to exist in this world because so much of it is made up of negative thought patterns which I can't relate to, and because I don't accept the dog eat dog nature of reality, makes life harder for myself to get ahead. I choose not to give in, but fight, fight for love.
I just want you guys to know don't ever give up on love, don't ever give up on yourself, don't ever give up on others, be love.
