A thought on filter disks..
    #2182789 - 12/16/03 02:31 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

A friend of mine is considering growing some jars, and he came up with a really good point. Although he doesn't have filter disks, he was wondering if he could just use coffee filters instead, perhaps double or trippled up to prevent contams. I told him I thought it may work fine if he wanted to use it for a pf style jar that had a perlite contam barrier, but he wants to use it for grain spawn. So do you think it would work, or is coffee filters, even doubled or tripled to risky for spawn jars? On a general side note, we would like to say that we both think that vermiculite is a piss poor contam barrier. Perlite is the way to go if you need a contam barrier, in our opinion.

I personaly think that it would work just fine. You would just have to trouble shoot in order find out how many layers of coffee filters is too much. Because if you have to many, that just cuts off all oxygen supply. But I dont know. 2 seems in my mind thick enough for me because I mean the filter disks are kinda thick too.

Conclusion and anseswer, yes it should work. Have you even considered pollyfill?

Sallright, my friend will probably just order some as they aren't that expensive. However, he told me he'll experiment and do one spawn jar with the coffee filter method. I'll post the results, but they may not be till next year.

Sorry for bringing this post back from the dead, but I wanted to post the conclusions from my experiment. Using coffee filters as a substitue for filter disks does not work. I used the coffee filter with wbs and spore syringe. The wbs dries up, and the coffee filter does not stop contams. End of story.

Trying to use coffee filters to stop bacteria and trich is like trying to catch a mosquito with a fish net. Ain't gonna work.
