Found these in the grass in multiple clumps surrounding a tree stump. The caps are 4-6 inches on the larger ones. What do you think?

It has been about 8 hours the stem has darkened but no bruising like i have seen in the one species am familiar with. Also I smelled the split stem and to me it reminds me of beer.

The stipe looks barrel shaped and not even and since there is a lack of bruising I would say Gymnopilus ventricosus as it's commonly mistaken for G. junonious although keep in that bruising does not always occur in G. junonious
I found this thread which might be useful
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15244550
There is also speculation that there are two groups of G. junonious, one which is active and one which is not
Other Notes: Even though many mushroom enthusiasts state that this mushroom is inactive on the west coast of the USA, "I found a patch that were highly hallucinogenic in the west coast (Joust), this confusion is usually becuase of a misidentifacation between G. ventricosus and G. junonius/spectabilis in which the former does not contain the hallucinogenic compounds psilocybin, psilocin, beaocystin, and norbeaocystin. Studies need to be done to determine that there aren't actually two groups of junonius; ones that are active and ones that are not. Some speculate that there is two separate species, G. junonius and G. spectabilis.

I bet your Gyms are active then, I think the ones that are active on the east coast, aren't on the west coast, or something like that.
Green/blue staining is not always observed on active Gymopilus collections, so it's best to learn what Gymnopilus mushrooms look like so you don't eat some less than worthy mushroom.

Is that a confirmation they defiantly are some kind of gym? If so does drying them really decrease potency? Can anyone confirm the beer smell?

Taste a piece and see if they are very bitter (reminiscent of ear wax).
Feel free to spit it out after you check.

They look what I know to be gyms only difference is they curl up a bit more on the ends of the cap, could just be the genetics of the local area type thing? They do taste bitter. --- --- --- (not an expert) --- --- ---

You needn't be but i understand entirely. After about 20 years I still wash my hands after I handle mushrooms likely to contain amatoxins even though there's no danger.
Here we're just trying to distinguish between similar active or inactive Gymnopilus species.

I chewed a tiny wet peace it may have been slightly bitter but not as bad as ear wax. It did remind me of the taste or smell of roses.

Consider a cup of mushroom hot and sour soup - has always range from palatable to quite good - the hot and acid balance well with Gym

Unless you want to send samples out for microscopy or sequencing I think you know about as much as you're likely to without bioassay or finding more specimens that exhibit bluing

If you haven't brushed up yet on mushroom microscopy, consider this a decent place to start: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/microscope_sections.html
Definitely wait 24 hours between bumps here though.
All the best.

I still haven't tried these things because I haven't got a microscope yet.I have never been so sure that I found something active till I found these but im still paranoid to try them. These would be the first mushroom that I have picked and consumed. How should I try these should I take a small amount say 1/4 or half a gram encase somehow they are mis identified?

I don't think gymnopilins are anything to worry about but look it up there's some interesting research on how they act in the body
