Chicken of the woods questions!
    #23751529 - 10/19/16 09:58 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Hey before I try to eat this can anyone confirm that its proper Chicken of The Woods?
Found it in central NY on a dead oak tree.

It grew there last fall too but I didnt harvest it.

How do I tell if it is good to use  or past its prime too far?

And does anyone have tips for storage/freezing it?

Thanks!!

You have Chicken of the Woods, no doubt.

Cut away the rubbery tough parts and cook thoroughly.

You can saute and freeze, dehydrate, dehydrate and powder, etc.  Fairly easy whatever method you choose.

If you ever encounter chickens again, use a knife to cut off the tender parts, those are parts which are the best to eat.

Definite COTW.
As mentioned above, cut yourself out the nice meaty/juicy parts.

I personally like to dry and powder a portion of any edibles i find.
COTW makes a delicious use for breading or seasoning.
Dryads saddled provide excellent flavor when powdered as well.

You can use most if not all of the mushroom by drying and powdering the parts that are too tough.

Nice find btw.

This is what grew on that tree last year. This tree is in a city park I cut thru

Thanks you guys!

I wasnt actually sure whether it would reconstitute nicely or not after drying, I have a few dehydrators for my cubensis  pan grows so thatll work nicely

Its funny the couple mushroom hunting trips (my first) I went on this summer weren't very good.
But just walking around the inner city here Ive found chicken of the woods, lots of Oysters, wine caps etc

They seem to love populated area or high traffic area.
Must be all the people carrying spores on themselves.

I tend to notice more mushrooms on trail sides than I do when deeper in the woods.

Are Chicken of the Woods reasonably able to be cultivated at home?

If so I might take a clone from one of these and get some spawn going

Really?

For myself I tend to see a set number of genera/species along areas with high traffic, then off the trails I see a greater amount of different genera/species.

I read in Paul Stamets Psilocybe Mushrooms Of The World book that you can spore print your clothes, so I used to do this with hats like what is pictured in that book, I would do this with Psilocybe caerulescens spores so they were dispersed to new areas.

On a similar note, I took a cubensis print (Menace) and it was old so I scraped the spores off the foil and threw them in a pile of horse dung, stable shavings, and hay.  Next year cubes were popping up in the barn refuse pile, and they were Menace cubes because of how the pilei were shaped, looked just like them, had no idea they would take off so fast.

Never messed with cultivating. Usually COTW can be found in such great quantity that I see no reason in home cultivation. Definitely wouldn't get the great taste the wild ones provide.  If I recall correctly, the mycelium can be hard to distinguish during colonization.

If you decide to have a go at it, let us know!
