you should of dunk'd the casing for 24h then put it back in the fruiting chamber...maybe knots are under that other layer you added--the myc was in fruiting mode not spread mode...

i think this makes sense

Spray water on the side of the casing and let it drip down and let the casing soak it up. If you want you can do this and put it in the firdge to give it the cold shock affect.

I'm just about to pick my first flush and was wondering the same thing. I'm not sure how much water to give it. It's a large bulk batch of 5" compacted straw/spawn with a 1 1/4" vermiculite casing in a large rubbermaid roughtote (or whatever they're called... $9.99 CDN at Wal-Mart).

I've heard straw can dry out a lot, so I'm curious how much I should water the casing.

Take your dried out casings, put something heavy on the cake so it doesnt float, then fill up the casing container w/ water and ALSO ADD A BIT OF PEROXIDE (3%)!  All the casings ive ever dunked w/ out peroxide have contamed  :frown:    Then just wrap in suran wrap, or put on the lid, and throw in the fridge for a day.  I give them 12-18 hours.  After that time just unwrap, take the weight off your cake, then just dump out all the water, dont touch the cake, just put it back in your fruiting chamber.  Wait a day to let the mycellium recover, then give it a few hours of light a day and you should see some results :P .  Im no expert, but this routine has worked for me everytime so far.

You should add the amount of water the casing lost in the flush. If shrooms are 90% water, weigh your fresh flush and add that amount of water to the casing (don?t need to add it at the same time, do it through light but constant mistings). Total water delivered= 90% the weight of the flush+ a little bit more for evaporation=total weigh of the flush (could be more, it depends on your enviromental conditions).
