Help - Rot On San Pedro Cutting!

Been having a bit of trouble with some san pedro cuttings and looking for a bit of help.
After taking the cuttings I let them dry for 2 weeks until calloused and then planted them in cacti and succulent mix and put the pots under the eaves of the house. Unfortunately we had a few days of wind and rain and the rain blew into the pots and the cuttings started to rot quite badly. I removed the rotten section and sterilised the cuttings with isopropyl alcohol every now and then throughout the drying process on recommendation of a friend and they calloused beautifully.
After letting them callous for about 3 weeks I planted them, resting them about 5 cm deep in dry soil, and decided to try and root them indoors in indirect light. The soil has remained dry throughout this process - they have received no water at all.
To my dismay, they have rotted again!!! After a couple of weeks they have gotten this red squishy rot, black in some areas, and I have no idea how.
It is mid spring where I am so I would have thought that rooting them would be quite easy, but then again I've never grown from cuttings before so its all a learning experience.
Any advice? Should I be letting them callous longer? I have read that it is also possible to leave the cuttings for a long period and allow them to grow root buds on their own, and then plant them, anyone tried this?
Thanks guys

Leaving them out of soil until you get roots is the safest way. Standing them in clay pots gives an easy way to check for roots.
Can we see some pics? Callouses can often get some red or black growth on them, but isn't always a problem. Opportunistic surface growths and not actual cactus rot.
I root my trichs like this:

So you just put them in clay pots and they root? Cool
Does it take longer than putting them in soil?

Put them nearly anywhere and they will root My last batch of loph degrafts rooted in a plastic tub, just bundled in there and forgot about for winter.
I've not rooted trichs in soil, if I take cuttings it is usually towards the end of the growing season, so they can root across winter, early spring, and be ready for soil at the start of the new season. No need to give them soil if they don't have roots. Keeping them in clay pots just lets me check on root growth easier, and keeps them upright. Maybe being in contact with a slightly damp substrate from time to time will encourage faster rooting. Patience is the safe path.

I will try and get a picture for you today. It did cross my mind it could be normal but it felt very wet and squishy, and this squishiness has begin to travel up the cutting so I think I am going to recut quick smart.
I think I will have to try the method of rooting without soil, any need to use rooting hormone or just put the calloused cuttings in a pot and wait? How established would be want the root system to be before planting?
Is trying to root them indoors a feasible idea?

I root all of mine indoors over winter in a south facing window, then move them out to the greenhouse in spring.
