Should I birth all my cakes, or should I hold one to attempt to bulk/coir?
    #23751047 - 10/19/16 02:54 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

So I've got 8 BRF Cakes in 1/2 pint jars- colonization is basically complete for all but one jar and consolidation period will start soon. I was initially just going to birth, dunk and roll the cakes, and then fruit in a SGFC.

However, I've been reading up on bulk (which I thought was waaay too intense at first) and the videos and forums I've read say that a single 1/2 pint jar can act as about 3 if you spawn to substrate. I've been growing them just as PF Tek would, though, and I'm planning on using coir if I do decide to bulk.

If I do bulk, I was also going to use that last cake that is a little behind the others so that it would be a staggered timeline.

My questions are whether or not I would get more yield from a single jar, I was planning on using trays to put into my SGFC. Another question was if I had to pasteurize the coir- I've read some places to do so, but other places don't even mention it. I do plan on doing another grow after this one, it's been great and a learning experience, but I'm not sure if I should just play it easy and stick to the cakes...

Stick with cakes.
Grains to bulk>cakes to bulk.
A cake is basically a bulk sub, with all it needs within.

Dude your doing everything right so far. Dont go changing it. Stick to your tek.

BRF cakes arent good for spawn. If you dont know what your doing it'll most likely contaminate.

Okay, so I shouldn't even bother going to bulk with my last jar anyways? I'm planning on cloning one of my grows from this, Koh Samui, and I might do grains with that one then.

I'll look up more information, but generally, are grains much different than brown rice? You still use Verm, right?

actually you use grain and then bulk to your bulk substrate (coir,straw,...). There are different bulk substrated out there with Verm, but i like straight coir (like in the bucket tek). It's easy and suitable for beginners. Afterwards you can use a casing layer, but it is not required for cubes.

Yeah THATS a good plan

M.T is right.

Spawn is colonized grains via: Rye berries, rye grass seed, wild bird seed and even pop corn in rare-unrecommended cases.

Substrate would be coir/verm, straw, horse poo, cow poo or even dumping your spwan or pre spent sub outside! :what:

All my jars actually were already colonized- I was just waiting a little longer to be sure... But pins started showing on ALL of them, so I dunked them tonight and will be rolling them tomorrow (:

Actually, a day later, these grew up on a lot of the cakes... I am so ecstatic right now actually. Almost there!
