Should Gladiatorial combat be brought back?

I say yes, let violent criminals fight for their freedom or die for public entertainment. Our justice system could be streamlined big time.
In Rome, many gladiators were professionals and most matches weren't to the death. The Romans would have naval battles, use chariots and animals, all kind of fun for the whole family.
Vote yes on proposition XVII

I say yes, but not violent criminals. That's cruel and unusual. Only volunteers and professionals who want to live their lives in absolute glory should be allowed the privilege.

So you want to cultivate the most ruthless and violent criminals in battle and then, after teaching them how to be as lethal as possible, set them free in society?

No, gladiatorial combat of prisoners is a terrible idea. While I approve of public executions as a deterrent to heinous crimes I think it should be a teaching experience, particularly for children. Parents could take their children and tell them about the scoundrel and what he did and why he deserves his fate, and to always do right and to be true to others and do the right thing. Death sentences are not something to take pleasure in, but should be for the edification of our society and for the promotion of moral virtue.

Yes, why not.
I can think of nothing better to do with a date than take her to see one man smash another mans head in, seems legit and not weird at all to bear witness to such bloodshed, and be dully entertained by such feats of depravity.
The real question is, who's going to be the major sponsor of such an event? Surely large brands like Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Verizon, etc, would not get behind such things, or would they?

They shouldn't have raped anyone then
At least they have a chance of vindicating themselves through a trial by combat

I'd like to see presidential debates replaced with gladiatorial combat
Its already been reduced to a shit-slinging contest, mine as well make it entertaining

Let's say you have a daughter, and she got raped. And then her rapist vindicated himself through combat on NBC during the quad-annual international summer games. Your vacation is ruined. Is that the kind of world you want to live in?

The only ones who should be able to do this would be people on death row. On the day you are supposed to be executed, instead you get to battle in the arena. If you win you get to fight another day, if you lose you obviously die on the day you were supposed to be executed. But a definite NO to them ever being released.

That might be a safer route as far as prisoners go

Sounds good
Most Roman gladiators were paid and the matches weren't usually to the death, non-lethal fights would probably be less gory than UFC or NFL.

I've thought about this before, i figured it would just cause more problems for everyone. Although maybe they could set matches for the peeps who've got beef with each other, instead of them stuffing knifes in their poo poos they could just give em knives and put them in a room together and let them sort shit out..
i was also thinking liek what if we were to drop off the most violent criminals out in the middle of no where like in the sahara desert or something and if they survive well then they,re free to go, and if they dont well then they die.. but then again u know just cuz someone is violent dont mean they;re necessarily bad people.. depends on the crime really.. i think this would apply especially to corrupt politicians, military personal, or cops..

Gladiator matches on fields with teams would be something to introduce. Leagues could train for a couple years and then the match season would commence. Each team could start with like 50 players, and not be allowed to import any new players once the season commenced and the losses started to accumulate. Maybe throw 10-11 people in per match. There would be massive incentive to keep as many players as possible per match, so that you have a sizable team left before the end of the season.
The tactics that would have to develop every year would be incredible. Tears would undoubtedly be shed for your team's defeats.
Riots on the streets when they lose. War breaking out between cities. Rigged matches for political gain. The eventual suppression of the human race. People losing faith in the games and realizing it's all a stunt to keep the populace down. Civil war. Brother against brother. Death of our culture as we know it.
It would be awesome.
