This. A million times over, this.
I have a huge one on my back that's semi finished, but it's gonna stay like that, as I see no point spending money on something I need a combination of mirrors to see. My tats are for me, and not for anyone else (with the one I got for my wife being an exception). That's why all my text is written in reverse; so it reads the right way for me when I'm looking in a mirror.

It really is man. Scarring oneself has been a practice mankind has used for rite of passage since time immemorial. That's all my tats are - just elaborate scars, to go along with all the other scars I've given myself or life has bestowed upon me. I love them with all my heart.
Marking my body is one of the greatest and most fulfilling things I can do in this world.

I don't know if your tattoo map is complete yet jsb. I don't see a blue steak anywhere. Any room to sneak in a nice little filet or something?

I gained 45lbs this year (fit, not fat) and my tattoos haven't warped at all.
Good job man, dat's a lotta gainz. Good to know though, I'm planning on getting more soon and I don't want them to look funky if I end up putting on more weight than what I was at prior to losing it.

Have you thought about getting any brands? I was so close to getting a brand a while back but Idk how I'd feel about it right now if I had gone through with it.

Already got a few, all done myself. Scarification is my favourite, not only for how surreal it is watching someone peel your skin off, but the end result is so bold:

do they numb you for that or you just take the insane pain?
IMO to me that is a sign of bravery, being cool with having your skin fucking peeled off.

It's actually not that painful - I've had tats that hurt more. The armpit is the fucking worst - I had to hold my breath and clench my teeth through every minute of it.
The scarification was like some wild acid trip - a 3 storey shop with psychedelic art dripping off the walls, Psytrance blasting through the stereo, and pretty much every bloke in there had their whole faces tattooed. As I will one day, something a little like this:

That takes real courage IMO. I can hide all my tats if I need to, I can fit in with the 'normal' people, but when you take that step you step straight into being a social outcast for the rest of your days here...

I've also thought here and there about whether I would get any face tats as well. I wouldn't get anything in the middle of my face tattooed though because I still want to look like me I guess, I'd only go as far as my jawline or temple. I shave my head slick bald though so I got a whole lot of room back there to fill up lol.

For some reason the beginning of the thread reminded me of this quote....."Smart may have the brains, but stupid has the balls."
I dig that too honestly. The whole under the clothes tattoos where it's hidden. I would honestly need it going into the profession I want to go into. People are too judgey these days about tattoos in certain workplaces. Luckily I dress kind of frumpy so I don't need to be too careful about where I put them.
But honestly tattoos don't really make me think of much when I see them on people regarding their 'coolness' or 'creativity'. I'm always very curious to see what they have and think it's pretty interesting. It's also a good ice break in social situations and I think you can tell alot about people's personalities by what they get, even if you don't talk to them. In a way, what people get on their skin is a branding of some sort, and most of the meaning is strictly for themselves.
I have this thought process that your skin is like the pages in a book and your tattoos are your words. But I do enjoy reading some good books. So I guess that is how I go about it.....

People back in the 70's and early 80's who had tatoos were usually badasses...now that they're so popular they come across to me as lame, especially considering how expensive they are. I'm actually kinda proud that i'm one of the few who has never gotten one. One thing i would consider would be one of those branding deals, which forms the image from the raised scar tissue

You're talking about the scar going keloid (raised). Not everybody's skin naturally does this, so it has to be agitated throughout the healing process to ensure it - it's not a given.
My couple of brands are actually sunk into my skin, rather than raised, and the only reason my scarification went keloid at all was because I scrubbed the scab of every night for two weeks with sugar and peroxide..
..it was actually far more painful doing that than getting it done in the first place.

That is so hipster to think that they were bad asses back then vs now.
What are all the people supporting saggy barb wire across their biceps from the 80s and 90s considered in this?
Don't want tattoos don't get them, if you are getting them for any reason beyond your personal desire you will probably regret it down the road.

Damn man. Are you a masochist by any chance?
That scarification definitely looks sick as fuck especially over the ink you already had there, but idk if I could handle that much pain (particularly the peroxide scrubbing)

I once ripped most of my forearm off from snow burn skiing would guess about 2/3s as big as jsb area and keeping it clean with warm water, soap around the edges, and peroxide was hellish. After a few days it wasn't as bad but those first couple times had me shaking.

Ah, I definitely got tendencies. It's an acquired taste though; it's taken me many years to learn how to really enjoy it.

I think people with visible tattoos tend to give them selves away.. For example when I see someone with a neck or face tattoo I figure that person is most likely down for some shit.. They're like stripes on a tiger, or the red mark on black widows alerting u to their poisonous nature.. Tis why I'm not too fond of getting tattoos on my arms or anywhere where they'd be too visible, cuz I feel like I'd give myself away and I'd prefer to keep peeps guessing..
When u get tats it's like u let people know of ur predation, u become a predator, as well as a target or prey for other predators.. Tats are indeed like badges, something U have to earn I guess, otherwise ure just fooling urself and other people..

Tats aren't like badges unless you're in a tribe or the navy. You can get them for whatever reason you want. You're right though, some people do treat you differently. My piercings put more people off than my tattoos though, I remember when I had my face pierced in multiple places, and 2 inch tunnels in my ears, and I was trying to help this old lady pick up her groceries she dropped in a parking lot she scurried over to them and told me to get away cuz she thought I was trying to steal them
