Pasty's agar tech

So after reading through a shitt tonne of pastys tech's I have decided to jump into agar. It seems like a no brainer for anyone who wants to grow more than 1 crappy ounce of subpar shrooms.
I have all the ingredients gathered except I'm dubious of my honey. It is on the slightly crystallized side. Also my potato flakes are quite old...like 3-4 years.
How important are those two ingredients? I mean can I omit one or the other and if not, how important is the quality of the honey/potato flakes?
Also I have both mini rounds (pp5) and petri dishes. I would think it would be easier to see growth/contams in a petri. What is the main advantage of the mini rounds over the petris?
Also any advice before I jump into this would be most welcome, especially from someone who has used his tech before.

I use Petri's I prefer them but it really is each to their own. Pasty's are easier to make but harder to view in most cases.

I would not worry about the potato flakes being old or past any BB date shown on them. Same goes for the honey.
If you want a clearer liquid you can boil up your honey in some water in a pot or microwave, then let it cool in the fridge, it will usually form a sediment in the bottom, then you can carefully pour off the top clear layer and use it. I would do this with LC, not really that important for agar.

You are just using a drop or so of karo or honey in pastys recipe. the flakes should be fine, that shit doesn't ever go bad unless it gets wet. Mini rounds are for no pour, you can't use petris for no pour they will boil over. If you use petris you need to pour.

I use Petris for growth and PP5's for drops.
Also OP, your old ass tayto flakes be aight!
And honey is actually not necessary, but the higher nutrient level will aid in spore germination/sexy time.
If I am germinating spores-I use the honey, when I am not I use no honey and 75% of the potato flakes listed in Pasty's easy agar tek. The mycelium looks to stretch out a bit more with less nutrients and it makes it a bit quicker for me.
If you are in doubt-follow Pasty's tek to a T and you'll be aye-okay!

Indeed I did. Nice big pile of plastic slag. Well, you learn by doing I guess. I had a fear that would happen. So I take it petris don't get get sterilized....how does that work? I know they are sterilized before you open them, so apparently they are one use. The mini-rounds look ok so at least i got something. That's the way you learn.

You pc your agar in a bottle and pour agar into your plates in a SAB. It sounds more difficult than it is but it's not at all. I prefer pouring plates as apposed to no pour hands down

No pour is cool for some things. Petris are so easy they make no pour seem like a hassle to me.
