Ultimate Tek Compendium: For Noobs And Onward * 77

Bodhi's Master Link List

Cacti/Ethnobotanical Tek List

All true noobs must watch these videos: RR's Lets Grow Mushrooms Videos
This entire hobby is just cooking stuff and aseptically adding spores or mycelium to it, don't over-complicate it.

The life cycle of mushrooms

:mushdance:Beginner:mushdance:
(simplest/cheapest routes to success to get you familiarized)

Glossary of Terms/abbreviations: A lot of the teks use abbreviations/odd terms, you'll want to read these at some point.
Quick Pictorial: How to Shroomery (worth a look, I didn't know about one of the buttons pictured for my first 1.5 years here )

Growing with Brown Rice Flour/PF-tek (very beginner  friendly):

Materials: Where do I buy all these weird cultivation supplies?      Tmethyl's Supplies and materials writeup

Pressure Cooker Operation:  (Don't be that idiot who's afraid of his cooker, just learn how it works.)
  • Bodhi's 'How to PC' Write-up
  • Elementary Concept of PC'ing by Boris
  • You might want to be like the cool kids and blow 300 bucks on an All American but its just thicker metal and fancier handles. Who gives a fuck? Just add more water to your presto or mirro to ensure that it never boils dry (boiling dry warps the thin metal) and its just as good. And 225-250 dollars cheaper. Buy 3 presto's for less than the cost of one AA and do 21 quart jars in one cook, or 12 bags. If on the off chance you boil one dry and warp it horribly, you can totally replace it and still be saving money compared to AA's. It wouldn't even be wasteful, they're great as huge pots if warped, or for melting down. (TLDR, I bought an AA and regret it big time) (bodhisatta has echoed this sentiment and lets face it he's the new and improved RR. Fuck AA)
  • "Don't use lime anywhere near your pressure cooker. It's highly caustic and will pit the aluminium. Use a plastic tub." -RR

Improving Potency:
Longer consolidation times for increased potency

Comprehensive Beginner Teks/Video Series:

  • Bodhi's Simplified Cultivation Methods and Link List Definitely look at this one, very well put together, fully up to date, no nonsense.
  • Frank's 12 steps to shrooms
  • Violets Invitro Pod Tek

  • Mushroom Cultivation Video Series by Munchauzen

    Quote:

Avoid: (Outdated/useless teks, common mistakes, and things best saved for seasoned cultivators)

-Glove Boxes (the much preferred 'Still-Air Box' (SAB) is only slightly different)
-Incubators: Only useful for agar, and even then not worth the effort/$$$ IMO.
    -Grow kits
    -Postal Tyvek
-Hydrogen Peroxide (I can't think of a single use for it in this hobby yet noobs are always oddly keen on using the stuff, does more harm than good)
-Lysol/disinfecting sprays: Excessive use of them anyway, nice for cleaning the air once in a while though.
-Obsessing over optimum lighting: Ambient sunlight from windows or whatever light-bulb you have is fine.
-Spores to Liquid Cultures: Contaminants are hard to identify in liquid cultures, you will have more consistent success if you inoculate them with agar plates instead. Though it can work
-Fear of opening jars: Just be quick and don't let your hand hover over the open jar.
    -Poor mans pod
-Improvised Fruiting Chambers: At least master the basics before experimenting.
-Automated Fruiting Chambers: For noobs anyway
-What all the trusted cultivators would have done differently when they were starting out

HOW TO NOT GET BUSTED: HERE

    :mushdance:Intermediate
    :mushdance:
(the more practical techniques, only slightly more difficult)

Grains: (I recommend whole oats, found at feed/farm stores, way cheaper/easier than WBS, you have to ask at the counter usually)

    Grain Jar Lid Design:

    Bulk Substrate:

    Casing:

Agar:  Agar: All you need to know

Anti-Bacterial Agar/Gelatin:(experimental/unverified but effective in my experience. Cleaned an otherwise un-salvageable culture with weak green tea agar, its now on grains as proof)
    Outdoor:

    Miscellanious Intermediate Level Posts

    Violets Other Teks:

    :mushdance:Expert:mushdance:
(Slurries and LC aren't any harder than G2G, but if your culture isn't totally clean contams will have a field day.)

Liquid Cultures: (Don't be intimidated by the "expert" label. My first grow ever started on LC, its just easier to fuck up. )
    • Grainwater Liquid Culture (GLC) by Hamloaf
    • EzLC Tek by Pastywhyte (a new tek that ensures sterility of the LC)
    • Simple LC by TL
    • Visual Signs of Contaminated LC's
    • The Biopsy Method by Josex. (allow me to summarize so you don't have to sort through that long-winded thread. You have a 10ml full of sterile water and poke a colonized agar plate with the needle, then squirt the mycelium that gets stuck in the needle into either another plate or LC. There, simple as that. This tek does serve a secondary purpose as well however, it is a great example of how not to write teks. There is such a thing as being concise and to the point.)

    Slurries/Liquid Inoculant:

FlowHood Construction and Use:  (Something I didn't realize when I got my first filter, the filter face is made of paper, very fragile, be careful with it)(Simplest fucking thing, make wooden box with filter inside, attach fan to box. Don't over complicate this shit.)

    Greenhouses:

    Bulk Sterilizers/Pasteurizers and Simple Machines:

Genetic crossing: RR's rattlesnake venom gene crossing post

    Exotics/Other Species:
(Not considered part of the 'expert section.' More intermediate difficulty)

Sclerotia/Truffle Producers: Some say these are easier than cubes

    Panaeolus/Copelandia  Species (Pan Cyans):

    Woodlovers:

    Gourmet/Edible Species:

Only replying so I can easily access this thread.  Great info, 5 shrooms to Psilosopherr.

p.s.  If anyone knows a way to save a thread to my "favorites" or something similar to a favorites list without having to post a useless reply please let me know so I don't post useless replies like this one.  Peace.

Bottom of the page, in the "Extra Information" box. Directly above the "Search the Thread" you will see "Toggle Favorite" in blue lettering. I just found it myself! Hope that makes your Shroomery-ing more enjoyable!

Word. I learn more about the tricks daily. It's kind of a pain in the ass, but it makes you feel good when you figure out how things work. Hey Psil, have you ever used spawn bags? I read that you can use food sealer bags, which I have a bunch of, so I was going to try. I was figuring I would cut a small hole and fashion a poly patch for it as well as install a SHIP. Is there a Tek for this that I missed somehow? If you were going to attempt this endeavour is there anything I should know about?

I've definitely seen some DIY spawn bags on here before, so you might try some searching.

I've still never done spawn bags myself...should probably get more bag teks in the list though thanks for pointing that out

Link me to any good teks you find if you feel like it :hatsoff:

Sure thing. There are several DIY bag teks, but they don't usually go to far because the cheapness of bought ones can hardly be beat. I am only making them because I am poor, I am bored, and I have tons of material laying around. Also I am kind of red neck so I like building stuff. I made a magnetic stirrer plate the other day. Lol.

I honestly made mine independent of knowing yours existed. Was tired of linking multiple things to people all the time. I dig yours more honestly.

    Thanks!

Been meaning to ask about your slurry to bulk post for a while. From the post it looks like you get comparable results when using 2 quarts of slurry compared to 5 quarts of standard spawn. you even got a bigger yield with your slurry tub.

    Does not compute
