Can one learn to sing without any natural talent?
    #23747341 - 10/17/16 09:43 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

I've always been terrible at singing but I would like to be able to sing well.  I excelled in HS band and have a modest knowledge of music theory.  I can often recognize and identify pitch intervals in songs and/or chord structures, etc.  But I've never been able to sing...I can only seem to sync my voice pitch to the radio/MP3 or whatever.  When I try to sing on my own I sound off-pitch.

Do you think some people can't sing well no matter how hard they try?  The reason I mentioned my musical background is to point out that the reason I suck at singing isn't because of a general unfamiliarity with music or music theory.  My voice basically just sounds like shit.

I think everyone is capable of singing, but I also believe that everyone has their own voice. If u try to compare ur voice to someone else's of course ure gonna think it sounds like shit cuz that's not ur voice, that's their voice and replicating someone else's voice is not an easy thing to do.

My advice, find ur own voice, and find ur own music to sing to, watch urself progress..

Take some singing lessons, or watching singing lesson videos. They can help develop your voice. Your voice is an instrument that needs to be practiced and maintained to sound good. With practice your range and ways of expression will increase, as well as being able to sing full sounding notes.

Practice and more practice is key.

IDK, but I don't think so. I know I suck. Practice and coaching can make some difference, but it's more of a You got it or you don't. I suck at guitar too, but at least there is better chance of me getting better if I ever spent more time practicing. For $15 you can get an effective guitar tuner. It's much harder with singing. I will sing in a group or background vocals, but lead vocals is another story.

In the later 70's I sang "Jumping Jack Flash" with every garage band, cause they all knew how to play it and I was one of the few people that actually knew the second verse. Some people told me I  was better than a couple friends who actually had aspirations to sing. It was just imitating a drunken slurred Jagger vocal. It helped that they were plugging the mike into the guitar amp. Distortion is a great crutch; I don't know much about singing, but distortion is a huge edge for low to medium talent guitar players.

But if it's what you want to do, go for it. What do you  got to lose. A zillion years ago Elton John had an album called "Don't Shoot Me; I'm Just the Piano Player"

All music gets better with tons of practice.
