ID Request: Gymnopilus luteofolius ... and possibly also ?
    #23747416 - 10/17/16 10:26 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Hello,

I have previously posted some photos from this patch of gyms. I grabbed a few more today and there is much more variation in appearance than I am comfortable with.
Can anyone tell me if these are different species of gyms? or maybe just different phenotypes?  One is a dark purple/red with a purplish stem while the other is a yellow fading to brown colour. Thank you

bonus points for identifying this predatory bird I encountered

lol the bird is similar to the mushrooms

the mushrooms look like Gymnopilus to me i think the variation is just older/younger darker/lighter mushrooms and mushrooms with more/less spores the bird is probably an Accipter Cooperii, but could be Striatus, it's hard to specify without more info.

Look like Gyms to me, but take a print, ALWAYS TAKE A PRINT when learning about new shrooms.  I can see the orange spores though on the stems/veil remnants.

Variation in appearance is normal, mushrooms change with age, and exposure to the elements.

Thanks for your input everyone, regarding the bird and the shrooms. (Right after i took the photo, that hawk dove and just about made lunch out of another bird, but it got away)
And yes, I am most definitely taking spore prints of all of these.

I do believe that a lot of the variation here is genetic, since mushrooms that look the same tend to be in clusters with one another. It just seems like too much variation to be due to environmental factors alone, especially considering they are all growing next to one another on adjacent piles of wood chips and more-or-less of the same age.

Cheers!
