question about making swabs

Hey everyone, just a quick and possibly dumb question. About to sterilize some q tips for swabs. I see everyone having some form of gas exchange on the jar with the swabs in them. Is that needed? Will the jar explode? Never PC'd anything that doesn't have some sort of moisture content. Thanks!

It won't explode. But will vacuum seal itself if there's no gas exchange. When you open the jar, it could potentially suck a bunch of dirty air in.
You can flip your jar lid rubber side up, and it will all work out.

Ok great, thank you! Ended up punching one 1/4 hole in the lid before I fired everything up.

If its not filtered or sealed somehow, you'll be exposing them to open air and defeating the purpose of sterilization when you remove them from the PC.

I would definitely just find some sterile swabs from a drug store or pharmacy, etc...
They are cheap and sufficiently sterile for swabbing spores to plates.
IMO PCing swabs is sort of a time-waster. I can find sterile swabs for just a few dollars USD where I'm from...

And real swabs from the drugstore are much longer than q-tips, letting you keep a safe distance from your plates. Even if they don't have it at the drugstore, you can ask them to order them for you, real cheap.
