Oyster Mushroom Business (Need help)

Hello everyone been a bit since I've been on here.
I have a great interest in starting a small local oyster mushroom business. I plan on producing enough to supply to a couple restauraunts. Id like to produce enough to make 40-60k a year.
I've seen a process on youtube involving wheat straw and barrels how efficient is this?
Also here are some questions.
1. Can this operation be completed in my backyard in barrels? Or in a shed? (Is the shed worth it?) 2. If I have to do it inside is 12x12 enough space? 3. Any efficient guides for growing? 4. How easy is the growing process? 5. Do I need to purchase spores? If so from where? 6. Are restaurants eager for oysters from a local grower? 7. What's the most proffesional and cheap setup?
Im a fast learner and hard worker. I need to make enough money to provide for myself so this is very important to me.
Many thanks on all help!

Use the search on here. Get a culture and try growing some , best to crawl before you run. Oh ,40 to 60k gross is definitely not small!

hey buddy yes you can do this in your yard or she'd if you had to do it any availablespace would work to answer some of you questions yes you need to obtain a live culture or spores, there are a few different methods I'll send you links for growing bulk oysters, oysters are really easy to grow, yes restaurants will buy oyster mushrooms but once you learn how to grow oysters you can grow different varieties from your knowledge that they will be more interested in and pay higher value for, as for set up it all depends on what you're willing to do or spend I have an indoor Greenhouse i use which is fully automated

I would go work on a farm if you're really interested. Think of it like this, if you want to make 50k a year you will need to sell at least 100k in product. And that's optimistic. And invest about 50-100k to get there.

Invest 50-100k? Seems a bit skewed where did you get those numbers from?
The farm idea is intruiging. I might try to contact greenhouses near me. Also farms see if I can rent a space for growing.
I think1-2k is fine. I saw online it said 2500 pounds is a good yield for a year and that's having a 12x12 ft space. If i can double or triple that spac at a farm tthat would be excellent.
Great suggestion on the farm , cheers

If you're in it for the money, don't do it. This is not a "get rich quick" kind of business. It's hyper time sensitive farming with all the intricacies of getting a quickly perishable product into someones hands before they spoil. Flies and Trich will hound you day in day out until you're trained to contain them. Chef's will niggle for lower prices and your loyal market customers will abandon you each summer for all the delicious fresh produce. Foragers will under cut your prices, packagers will eat your margin and you'll question your sanity while making $2/hour.

your setup doesnt have to be that expensive. I've used 2x4s as a frame and then vapour barrier to hold in the moisture and separate the room from the rest of the shop area. then you need some fans, one for intake of fresh air, one for outake of c02, and one to keep the air flow going around the room. a humidifier or two, or pond fogger, some lighting and a good timer. shouldnt be too bad, but the problem is that its not everything you need. the substrates, the bags or jars, the distribution, the storage, boxes or clamshells or whatever you decide to keep them in, marketing, etc etc. you could do your grow room for the amount you've proposed but not an entire operation. Then it also depends on your market, how much are you going to sell for? competition? what do mushrooms go for in your area? you dont need 100k, but youre gonna need to be organized if you want your costs to be down.

Check the link in my sig.
Here is some maths as you seem reluctant to believe what people actually doing this are saying.
You want to "make" (say) $52K p/a so that's $1k/week,
In order to make that (assuming that's your wages and you do all the work yourself and rent is not too high) you will need to sell $4K/week
At say 7$/lb that is 570 lbs/week to pick and chill
Now if that is Grey Oysters you will need around 3000lbs of sub fruiting every week.
So you need to make 3000lbs of sub every week
But Grey Oysters only fruit 2 weeks in 8 so that's 12,000lbs in your fruiting rooms And don't forget incubation so that's another 6000lbs kept at 24C
.. and that's for quick easy and productive grey oyster.
I could go on as I have not mentioned spawn, delivery, waste etc. but you should hopefully get the idea.

For some perspective, a subway franchise costs $15,000 to license in the first year. Just a piece of paper. For $15k you could buy the equipment to start a small mushroom farm that could potentially pay you about that much the first year. So we're in a pretty low margin business, but at least overhead is also low.

I've spent about $1200 on my setup so far in my shed, of course I Already had the housing, I just needed proper insulation etc. I don't see myself turning a real profit for the first year, but as long as I can start selling in the first few months I will be happy.
What types of restaurants do you guys try to market to? Or do you just hit them all down the block? I'm starting my business right around December, January, so i'm hoping I Can find a way in to some of these restaurants before they get real busy, so I Can scale with them.
