my 2 cents about voting for president * 1
    #23745274 - 10/17/16 11:21 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

*you may to excuse my naiveté, i am not on any political side, and every four years I have to explain to someone why I don't vote, but this is how it seems to me

when it comes to voting for the president, this country does not have a democracy. we vote for the 528 people in the electoral college to place their votes. and they apparently don't even have to vote based on what their segment of the population wanted. to me it just feels like a joke that we have to go through all of this campaigning and shit when the population in the end isn't really who decides.

but i don't know which is better, republic or democracy, but i don't see democrats advocating a real democracy or see republicans talking about how democracy is worse than a republic. why even call themselves those names then?

im clearly stupid when it comes to this kind of thing but i know this, ill never vote for someone else to place my vote

it is a bit of a joke, but democracy exists in different forms and a republic isn't by definition opposed to a democracy, it's just a democracy with inalienable rights that a government cannot take away, whereas a 100% 'pure' democracy lacks that structure. Most real-world democracies have a constitution of some sort, and in that sense I would say a republic is absolutely preferable to pure democracy as most people are demonstrably idiots

You are very correct in pointing out that we do not live in a direct democracy, but as a
practical matter the presidential electors always vote the way the people wish. Many states
have laws to punish and void the votes of "faithless electors" who vote contrary to the
citizens of their state.

That being said, I agree the electoral college is stupid and needs reform. That is why I vote
for candidates that support electoral reform.

And just so ya know, the President is only 1 of the items of lesser direct impact on your life on
the ballot in Nov 8. The entirety of Congress may be changing hands, you may have propositions,
and your state and local elections are extremely important (with your vote having much more power
here to boot)
