Maintaining SGFC temp
    #23744264 - 10/16/16 11:54 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Seeking advice on how to possibly keep temps up in a small SGFC.
As mentioned in an earlier post, I live on a boat and so elaborate setups are kind of a no-go. The winters can get pretty chilly out here and so space heaters are just a way of life (great for brewing lagers though).
My biggest concern is night time temps.
Now, I've already picked up a vibe from this board that tells me to follow well established instructions EXACTLY, but I'm curious to see if anyone has successfully tried using some kind of heating pad or something to keep their growing chamber at ideal temps. I've seen mini heating pads that are safe to attach to plastic (for folks that keep roaches as pets??), such as this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003NKMEQC/ref=twister_B00ZJUHUAO?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I assume this would present an issue since one of the smaller walls of a SGFC would need to lack FAE holes to accommodate such a device.
Anyhow, suggestions? It'd be nice to hear that there is a solution other than to wait for the warmer seasons..

What kind of room are you growing in? What's the avg temp at night in your space? My advise if your a brewer and not producing a lot of cakes is bluid a small plastic tent with a heater in it with your brew buckets closer to the heater on the bottom. And put your sgfc on top of that tent. This would allow stable temp for the achol to ferment and not let the myc to freeze.

I haven't checked the room temp during the coldest times of the night, but I'd suspect that this time of year the room will reach mid/low 50's at night. During the day I set the space-heater to 69° F, cuz, well, 69.
I can isolate my brewing carboys (no buckets) from the heat and maintain appropriate temps for the lagers during the winter, and during the summer I've kept a single carboy right inside a kegerator if I'm making a lager.
Building tents is a bit more elaborate than I want to get; I already have to rationalize all my hobbies w/ my lady friend as is..
Right now I only have 4 cakes that may or may not work out because of earlier mistakes (https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23739994/page/2) - hopefully my rescue efforts are fruitful. If I get the knack of this I would love to be able to have 16 cakes go at a time, but that's just a pipe dream.

space heater pointed away from the shotgun chamber is your best bet. A heating pad on top or aquarium heater under the perlite will just make the chamber a bacterial breeding ground.

I would not wrry bout it to much because low temps mean dense meaty mushrooms. they will just take longer to fruit

As an update, I've been keeping my SGFC in a room that has a space heater keeping the room in the upper 60s during the day and upper 50's at night.

I have 4 cakes in the tiny chamber, all of which are averaging ~20 pins a piece as of now, I think. There always seem to be a few that escape my eyes when scanning them over, but taking pics and circling helps a lot.

They are taking much longer than I would have anticipated to grow though. It all began w/ several mutant blobs after ~6 days. Then, 2 or 3 pins began appearing on each cake after another 5 days. Since then, those original ones have been growing as about 15 more have appeared per each cake over the last week. Some pins seem to like the top of the cake, while others are more content growing out the sides. I am on day 18 since they made it into the chamber.

I'm including pics of two different cake tops w/ a pencil for scale. Based on other threads I've perused I think that aside from growing at a glacial pace, everything is going according to plan. If you see otherwise, please feel free to lend your 2 cents.
Thanks.

The room I grow in will consistently go below 60f in fall and winter, so I just run a space heater when the temp drops to about 65 until it slowly comes back above 70f.  That's it really.  The SGFC will always be warmer inside due to thermogenesis.  Same with any kind of fruiting chamber with fruiting mycelium in it.  You can hover between 65-70 and this will actually give you denser and meatier fruits that tend to weigh more by volume.  They will grow a little slower, but the difference isn't enough to warrant concern.  Slower is better.

Growing in cold weather is tricky.

U will get slow growth cause of the cold fall and winter temps.

Best to buy an oil-filled heater to heat the room since it has no fans to interfer with the air drafts that power the SGFC.
