So far I've come up with this
1) staying social 2) staying stress free 3) keeping active (not sure how much exercise is a part of this if at all)

Good stuff,
and you know what's really, really important about being yourself?
It's your only connection to God.
Purely just being without doubts, so yourself, will unite you with bliss eternal.

I would say, first, to realize that you're only human and that there is no such thing as "staying happy", and instead simply strive to be OK with yourself when experiencing all of those other invariable emotions. I work at this mostly by staying busy and reminding myself to be thankful.
And yes, both exercise and social activity are essential parts to a healthy life.
Also, if you can cultivate passion for a particular hobby or skill, it will benefit you immensely.

Perhaps?
Semantics or not, I did offer actual suggestions.
Good luck.

You did offer good suggestions... I was referring to the part where you said there's no such thing as "staying happy" . In a general sense, there is, in a literal sense, there isn't. That's all I meant when I said "semantics".

Good call... a monk on top of the Himalayas probably doesn't need to stay social.
But for most of ys, we're social animals and not disciplined masters.
The opposite of staying active is being lazy, so that has to be a good one imo.
Can't be hapoy when stressed, that's a given.

1) Learn to observe your thoughts, not be caught up in their constant maelstrom.
Everything else comes a very distant second to that for me.
-------------------- Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not. --Jac O'keeffe

How did I miss that? Meditation is definitely one of the keys.
But I still think one can be meditative and joyfull while still being unhappy. Happiness is something more imo... it's part of those primitive parts of the self that have an inherent desire to be social, to be out in the world exploring and moving and being active. However, I do think a highly trained monk for example can transcend beyond these primal desires or instincts.

Reaching a state where your thoughts dont play a role in life , just pure awareness and being happy with yourself , loving yourself , your surroundings , caring about others and just living every minute of this gifted life

Honestly if you can bring yourself to do what the sages of the East did, and Jesus etc., which is realise the Self in yourself, to identify with existence itself, your life is totally set. Totally. Set.
Self-reliance is one path, surrender another, humor yet another since essentially God, the infinite being itself, is at play with itself and no amount of pain worries Him.
He is Who you are. You are utterly fearless, mighty, unparalleled in your inner beauty.
Simply stop the joke, but, since you are God, you are not really doing anything to yourself... so there is nothing to stop.
The essential premise is, you generate it all. The fear, the doubt, as a play, you encapsulate all of it.
You have two options, stop the suffering that doesn't affect you, or totally delve into life with all its ups, downs, attachments, heartache and glory.
Either way, you know, you realise, you're enlightened.
I love you. I love this.
Walk on!!!
