What do you hate about the supermarket experience?

For me it would be the cramped layout and lack of smooth navigation. The queues don't really need mentioning.

Food is so complicated as an adult. You see people in the supermarket, they're just sweating...nobody knows, "What do I eat?" The protein, the carbs, the fat content, OMG FAT CONTENT.
Just walking up to each other, "You look pretty good. What are you eating? Maybe I'll eat that."
The whole supermarket itself is designed to breakdown your sense of having any life outside the supermarket. It's like a casino - there's no clocks, no windows, no easily accessible exits.
You ever not buy anything in the supermarket and try to get out of there? It's impossible, there's no way out.
You can see what happens to people. When they're walking up to the supermarket they really have a whole sense of purpose. "I'm gonna get this, I'm gonna get that, I'm gonna pay for it, I'm gonna get out of here and get back to my normal life."
You see that same person 10 minutes later and they're just like, "What aisle is this? Why did I come up here??"
Always noticing something new..."Oh, they've got 'em in mesquite flavor now. What is mesquite? I wonder if it's made from mosquitoes."

I hate when people leave their cart in the dead center middle of the isle and walk off to go look at stuff. Meanwhile you have to move their shit just to get by.

I don't like that all the groceries are distributed throughout the store in such a way that you have to cover the whole store to get a meal.
They do this to make people see more of their products, so that more gets sold.
That obviously didnt have people lugging a 150lbs backpack around in mind.
I'm not lazy. You try it, bicycling there, shopping in a grand tour of the store and bicycling back with 150lbs strapped to you. Not very comfortable.

Above all else I fucking hate the moms with their young children crying and screaming at the top of their lungs while they act completely oblivious and take their good old time putting like $150 worth of groceries through the self-checkout while making everyone else stand by and listen to their Devil's spawn scream and cry like a broken record player
Like I mean I understand that some people have no choice, they have to bring their kid shopping with them for whatever reason but I mean come the fuck on, at least give the poor kid a damn lollipop so he'll stop raping our ears with his droning little hacksaw of a voice

I don't have anything to complain about grocery stores. Grocery stores are an enormous luxury and privilege to have access to that most people don't and I live on in an area where I have access to multiple different types of grocery stores. I have enormous selection of everything I could possibly want and more all for a cheap price.

so the solution is simple, cycle there, buy 20lbs in food which should last a few days and then cycle back home, dont buy 3 weeks worth of food at a time. 3 trips a week to the grocery store by bike would leave a person much healthier than 2 trips per month and if you learn where the items you would frequently buy are located you can simply go to those locations and grab them without grabbing all those unneeded items you get on impulse. self control also helps there.

Having more items doesn't make a case for a better country (economics aside) so ixnay on the insult lol.
That aside, abundance of choice is troubling because having less options teaches you to live with what you have. And it doesn't have to be bad either. If I remember correctly, there is a TED talk on this topic.

Every time I use a fruit or vegitable for a sex act people get all judgemental and call the police. I mean I'm not going through all the trouble of buying a cucumber, taking it home, greasing it up, inserting it in my anus, then having to go back and return it when I realize it's not big enough to satisfy me when I can easily test out the different cucumbers right there.'
So irritating. Also when I pick a line I think is the shortest then I realize the cashier is a miserable tard and it will take longer for them to scan 10 things than the next one over to process 10 customers.
Oh and when I see another person going for the same line is me it is always awkward trying to box them out, but it is satisfying have them stand behind me when they only have one pack of gum or a soda and I have a whole cart of obscure shit that will take forever to ring up.

I hate how you can't ask for a taste of the fruit. I only buy fruit from the market now, too often I came home with a good haul of fresh fruit only to discover to my horror that it's total shit.

Does anyone remember banned user RanOutOfWeed? He once made a thread about how his local newspaper wrote an article about his racist rant when he went to a town hall meeting to complain about "black people sitting on the fruit" at the grocery store. So I guess he felt pretty strongly about it.

There's a good reason why they don't. Kids throw tantrums as a method to get things they want. Giving in reinforcing that behavior. While not giving in results in a tantrum spike, the kids soon figure out it didn't work & the behavior improves. So they'll not be screaming in a store far sooner than those that get what they want every time they flip.

But for me, it was working in one. I had a cashier job for like 4 months in junior year of high school. I made $8 an hour. It sucked. I decided to quit and got myself a job at a 5 star restaurant and started making $20-$35 an hour for all of senior year. From then on, everytime I bought beer I went to that grocery store and balled out.

Fun fact: The cereal aisle, all the mascots on cereal boxes eyes are ridiculously huge, and point down and to the right, this makes the characters catch children by the eye enticing them to grab the box and say "MOMMY MOMMY". The color schemes play into it as well, but i don't remember how exactly.

I used to work in a supermarket as a night cashier. The one that I worked at was called Sobeys, it always bothered me walking around the store seeing all the priming and general coersion. The name Sobeys actually has the word 'obey' in it, the way they stylize the lettering for it leaves the 's's barely looking like letters in the sense of the chosen font for the rest of the word. So it says obey, in big giant letters all over the store. What I dislike about going to supermarkets is actually just the process of paying for shit though. It always feels so awkward and it feels like a maybe fifth of all of them are actually genuinely friendly. Interac flash really helps with this awkwardness. Thank Jesus.

That is also a pain, yes. On the flipside of that its nice to have a supermarket in walking distance. which i do.
Sometimes i go to CVS instead. they even have the milk cheaper sometimes. lots of deals you wouldn't expect to be cheaper than the market!

One thing that sucks about living in the country... Also you have to drive 2 hours to go to any restaurant that is decent.

I've always wondered if places like Sam's Club or Costco ever catches people leaving without stuff they didn't pay for or the cashier didn't ring up. I've never seen anybody get caught before. If I worked there seems like you'd get used to just glossing over the receipt without actually looking closely at every single item.

i try and always stop at roadside trucks/independents or little farm shacks that sell their fresh picked by the side of the road. And i don't like supermarkets because their food isn't fresh a lot of the times and also, and you can only pick up married women there on weekdays, as a general rule.

I've never worked in a supermarket but I feel for those that do, not that I'd knock it.
As far as buying goods to keep you alive, the supermarket is pretty convenient.
Any job that has no room for promotion or personal growth is probably not an enviable one by the go-getters of today, although being an essential cog in the wheel.
I imagine this wasn't how they pictured themselves ten years ago when they were thinking of their future.
So although they are probably not where they'd like to be at in life, they are still there, persevering.
They put up with all your 'nonsense' all day, day in, day out.
Customers of all desctriptions all wanting to be served, and fast.
They mightn't be having the best day of their lives, in fact, they probably aren't.
So it's admirable to see chirpy cashiers, who enjoy doing what they do, passing on a little chirpiness with each scan. They just get on with it; the conveyor belt must keep on conveying.
But not everyone deals with such situations so well.
Not everyone has become elucidated to the good life tip of making the best of things.
They could be depressed, life not going according to plan.
Can't handle the heat of cunty customers, day in, day out.
Can't afford to quit.
Confidence smashed to smithereens.
Endlessly turning conveyor belt, bursting your brain.
So ya, I can sit in their shoes.
OMG, I had to queue for 3.5 minutes to pay for my goods and I get to leave the supermarket again, and not spend my day there, serving people like me, and having to hear crying children and people shouting at me about why the milk is all gone. What a harrowing life I lead.

One thing that sucks about living in the country... Also you have to drive 2 hours to go to any restaurant that is decent.
there's an abundance of restaurants between my town and the 2 towns close to me, the problem is, there are only 3 good places for chinese about 8 chinese buffets that are pretty bad, 2 thai places that are pretty good, 4 italian places that are good and the rest is about 20 mexican places with only one of those being really good and 90 country cooking restaurants that all suck monkey balls
they just closed down a steak house about an hour from me that was fantastic, you'd never want to eat there just looking at the outside of the place
does this look like a place you'd want to eat?

I knew an old man that did this, I used to drive him to the liquor store every night, his son would take him to the farmer's market 3 days a week to pick up some produce to sell. it's about a 100 mile round trip from where he was, he pulled in about $300 per day and his son banked the money for him, he lived on the lot that he was selling produce from and he wasnt living conventionally, he slept under a flat bed trailer regardless of the weather. I bought him a tent

Aldis started in Germany and went international. Cheaper than save a lot. Carries some organic items. Paid $1.69 for a gallon of 2% milk on Thursday. They have funny commercials.

Yeah we have an aldis but it is weird. Like you pay for carts and more like a route that you walk through towards a register than a consumer food warehouse.

Think of it as free exercise, oh out of shape one.

as asante was saying, stores are set up so you have to walk past nearly everything to get what you want, aldi is small so it's much easier to do that, Sams Club and Costco are more the food warehouse than aldi, aldi is neighborhood market size and they have a rotating stock on some items with only a few things being exclusive to their stores, a store brand if you will

The fact that I'm not totally wanting to be around people but I have to feed myself. The layouts I hate not knowing where things are. I sweat to God if I missed something while looking the store end to end. Which is basically a quarter mile. Fuck me.

I worked in Lidl, which is just as bad (if not worse) than Aldi for four months. I quit just over a year ago and I feel sorry for some of the people I see still working there. They are well and truly dead inside.
I'll quote this site, which I have read from top to bottom and agree with 100%
http://franklludwig.com/lidl.html
Quote:
In 1973 Dieter Schwarz had an idea. As he watched one of his employees kneeling in front of the shelf and stacking up the bananas, her face red with embarrassment for having failed to fulfil her duties in the assigned timeframe, a new concept was born. She knew she should have finished an hour ago. She knew she wouldn't get paid for this hour. And yet, the feeling of inadequacy combined with the fear of losing her job caused her to stay. This was (and is) common practice in the sector - but Dieter Schwarz was about to perfect it. If the sheer terror at the thought of losing one's income was causing workers to do one hour of unpaid overtime every day, why not three or four? If he increased their workload without increasing their hours and forced them to stay as long as they were needed, he could considerably cut down on personnel expenses, and this would enable him to sell at prices no one else could compare with and still make an enormous profit; he basically sells the product to the consumer at half the normal retail price, and his employees pay the other half. Employers break the law all over the world to squeeze the most out of their workers. But the Lidl concept is entirely based on breaking the law: Lidl could not exist in a country that applies their labour laws!

Ignorant poor trash of all colors carting around a basket of kids..buying food with the lone star card (food stamps). Then lighting up a cig as the leave the store. If you can afford cigs buy your own food. Or asking you if you can buy them alcohol and they will buy you some food in return since you can buy booze with the card. It's even worse when they are obese on the electric cart, with kids, smoke, and use the lone star card. Everything else about the grocery store is ok. But I can grow better produce, raise healthier tastier livestock, and hunt/catch better game/fish. In fact I never ever ever buy fish, nevery will. Catching tuna, snapper, grouper, etc is the way to go.
