Organic calcium sources?
    #23740478 - 10/15/16 05:24 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

Hey y'all... I recently took a close look at my liquid fertilizers and it seems as though I don't have anything for calcium :grrr: it seems to be a pretty neccesary micronute. It is in my crab meal but its so strong that I can't use to much of it..  And honestly I'm new to it and am still figuring it out. I'm a little scared of it tbh :uhoh: but anyway... A few things came up from some googling.... Two that stood out were eggshells and chamomile teas. Both were suggested for foilar feeding. Does anyone have experience with either of these approaches or know of anything else that would work well and not pose a threat of cal overdose?

Thanks for your time and advice:grin:

Much love:heart:

Do you like to use those here And there, as needed... Or just one large amount to be used when mixing up soils? Do you ever have any issues with phg because of any of those?

I have calcium carbonate to stabilize drilling fluids. A little goes a long way so i didnt really need a 50 pound vag of it. I keep a coffee can around of it. Good stuff man.

I add crushed marble to my mix - cos I can get marble chips easily.  I also have a bit of crushed shell ready should I run low.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Marble? No way? Do you add this to your soil mix when making up the initial soil bed? Or just rubbing it in along the top soil?

Cool ferrel..  Same question as the one for Spanish fly... ?

Thanks KBG and saythat :super:

I decided to make an eggshell tea. I eat eggs daily and like the idea of utilizing my trash... I'd do a compost pile, but my place is so small and I'd def piss off my neighbors more than I already do if I went that route :hehehe:
But anyway a recipe I saw mentioned to take 20 shells and boil them briefly with a gallon of clean water... Then give it a 24hr steep/soak... After that, filter and use for foilar feeding...  Sooooo, I only need a quart, so I dropped down to 5-6 shells per quart. I'm waiting to finish the steep and will likely spray tomorrow. Next time I make up some soil tho, I'll look into some of the suggestions mentioned here.

I appreciate the suggestions, gracias amigos! :sunny:

It may be easier to just take the boiled shells, crush them and sprinkle them on top of your pots. They will slowly leach calcium carbonate to the substrate (assuming you water from above, that is). Do you water with tap, rain or well water?

I add 20% crushed marble to my basic mix.  Additionally I also often use marble chips as a top dressing, for two main reasons - it looks smart, and any seeds that happen to fall can germinate in the shade underneath.

And why would a compost heap piss off your neighbours??

Right on, thanks for the info

Why??? Well, I live in an apartment building and I have a lot of projects going. None of which are too much up anyone's ass, but I can tell my gear aggravates some of the neighbors sometimes  a compost heap, the possible smell and the food scrap and maybe bugs would prob piss at least one person in the building off... Mostly just because space is super limited... Plus there's all these pesky ferrel cats everywhere and if I had a compost heap, I'm almost certain it would be full of their crap... Which would def piss everyone off... Including myself  more than likely. I do miss having a pile though. I use to really enjoy going out and turning it with a shovel and seeing the worms happy and working :super:

Jeez I hate feral cats.  I do have a cat of my own, Tara.  But those ferals are a nuisance.  And the bloody women who insist on feeding the bastards.

Look into bokashi bins for small space composting.

I would use crustacean shell over anything listed here. Why do you think it's too strong?

 I hate to say it, but I was that sorry bastard who feed these cats... For three years at that! Then I got my own cat and every time I let her out the fucking ferrel cats try and attack her! I use to think 'oh wow, look how friendly they are rubbing on my legs and door...' Until it came clear that what they were doing was just marking their territory and trying to muscle my cat out the equation. I run those fuckers off now! Everytime I let out my cat now I come out with her... If any of them try anything there's consequences. I'll either throw shit at them, chase them with a water bottle or bark like a rabid dog and scare the fuck out of them. I hate to do it in some ways but at the same time I can't stand for them punking my cat around. No fucking way!:noway: I wish I had a garden hose by my door honestly!

What did the last straw with me was one day the head of their pack tried to fight my cat... So I ran the bitch off (and they get mean... Literally as I write this, I hear some fighting... No joke man).. When I come back, I see one squatting over my 80$, currently irreplaceable red vein Thai kratom plant!!!:enraged: I was furious! Seriously pissed man. I ran him off and then I handle a quick thing only to come back and SEE THE SAME FUCKING CAT at it AGAIN!:grrr: I was insanely upset at that point and chased it with a spray bottle... It became a game to him because he kept trying to dome back. So I grabbed a brick and hurled it at it! Then I brought in my tree for the night... The next day I put up a wire fence around that and my pereskiopsis and hoja santas. After that day I never fed them again. I have no remorse... The worse is that I have this girl that just moved in who works at a stray cat recovery place and has a big furry heart. She heard a little bit of the story and had judged me like I'm a bad person or something. Totally not understanding my position and just being ignorant a d judgemental. She even leaves my old food dishes out and by my door, to try a d sway me into feeding them again. Fuck that... And fuck anyone who had a problem with that. I am a farmer and a pet owner... Those are !y concerns... Not a bunch of parasitic assholes looking for trouble.

I'll look into them, thanks torch:thumbup:

Why? I'm not a 100% sure... Mostly because all then guys at the hydro/organic shop have told me countless times 'be really careful with this stuff man. It will burn the hell out  of your plants if you use to much....' And being new to it and having bad experience with other strong fertz like blood meal in the past has left me kind of freaked out honestly. It  does seem to kick serious ass when I mix it in with stuff... Its mostly just what they Kept telling me and also that the reccomended dosage is so low per gallon. Idk man... Would you say its really that insanely strong to work with? The stuff I have has a calcium number of 12 and its the only fertilizer/soil amendment I have that really has a good bit of calcium in it. Id really like to learn how to use it correctly and SAFELY... I just don't want to lose any of my babies in the process, you know?

I've been mixing it into soil mixes directly for transplants... But how do you like to use it? Can one make a tea or mix just a little on the top soil a small amount at a time and gradually feed plants as needed?

I mix it into my soil mix at the same rate of other amendments. I also top dress with it a bit. If you have a good amount of organic matter in your soil mix, I wouldn't worry about Ca too much. You can also add gypsum and/or oyster shell like kactus.brand.g mentioned. I personally add all three to my mix/fertilizer blend.

Right on :super: thanks for the feedback torch. I'm planting some tobacco tomorrow, I'll give it a go with the shell meal and I'll try and hit the organics store for some of the gypsum or oyster shell. Its funny in my city there's so much oyster shell... Literally everywhere. People use it for filling holes or even dirt roads, mostly parking lots... Would there be anything wrong with using that stuff? Say if I cleaned it off with a boiling water soak and then drying... Followed by a heavy smashing with a hammer in between some wood?

Again I like the idea of utilizing stuff in my hood or from my waste in gardening... I don't get around to living that dream too often anymore, just because of my small space mostly, but I'm still all about the idea of it! Cool. Thanks again for everyone's contribution and willingness to share and shed light:heart:

Much love:thumbup:
