Mulch from recycling center.

So a recycling center sells mulch by the cubic yard. 10 USD per cubic yard. That is roughly 400 LB.
Was talking to the center though. It is mostly mulched soft wood. Not sure if this would be a valid option. It is untreated and right from the local area.

Only wood pellets I have been able to source out here have been Douglas fir. I can't find a good constant hardwood source. I've tried mills, other than that it is the wood scrap piles but that is not constant and I don't have a mulcher and the cheapest muclher rent per hour is 50.

Good for outdoor beds. Use clean spent substrate as spawn.

What is the source. If it is tree removal there is a lot of diseased and infected trees.

I have the same issue with getting hardwood, coir is expensive and straw isn't usable for me. Ended up experimenting with enriching paper pellets, I learned so much.
Recycled, no added chemicals or additives, no anti fungal crap.

Tree removal sell mulch and would be the same boat as the recycling center softwood and hardwood mixed.
Feather I'm not sure how practical that would be in bulk for wood lovers
The mulch at the recycling center is mostly wood.. Not the bark
Fuck cooperate stores. Found lowes online had hardwood. Spent an hour inside looking for it. I pulled up the item number and started comparing it to the items in the store. Behold the item in the store not even the same name of the item online. It "softwood" online advertised as hardwood. I would rather go with Douglas fir than mystery softwood.
So my option is random wood mulch or doguals fir pellets.

Here is rr talking about mixed wood being good and not to worry about the soft wood but that is in a east coast environment with mostly hardwood

400lb for 10 USD. I can see hard and softwood mixed in. Some areas in the pile look better than others.
They do have fresh cut hardwood logs I could use for outdoor logs. The clear didn't know the price for then.

Right now I'm just doing grocery bag. More of a question would it be worth mixing with Douglas fit pellets since I can't source hardwood

Experiment! Watch your pellet ratio if your using bath pasteruization. Pellets oversatruate your sub.

I use steam, The chips and pellets would be separate to ensure proper water content after.

Are you sterilizing or pasteurizing? One issue i saw with using steam, never had, but you need to pre soak. I opted for the bath because its just a 1 hour process then cool.

I do everything steam pasteurization. I use to use soak pasteurization. Some say you can pasteurize longer due to the fact of gas exchange. Since I'm pasturizing I'll need a decently high spawn to wood ratios for most species to out compete mold in the wood.
Another reason I'm looking at durable containers is I can't directly source hardwood anywhere. So it has to be a mulch piles or I'm stuck with Douglas fir pellets. So that is why the idea of a dollar tree 40oz container looks good. I can toss swordbelt and kings in there. Yeah might be a little more labor intensive but the widest point is at the opening.
Might not be ideal for ease of labor. But I'm not as far along in production. I'm going to be testing the waters here. We get a lot of mushrooms from California,Oregon and Canada here. Canada and Oregon being on our boarder.
I like the idea of keeping material cost down.
I'm also looking at the legality of selling whole Tobacco leaf. I'm looking at pumpkins, cucumbers and sunflowers also if I can't get tobacco leaf sold here.

What about straw? Do you live near a grain producing region?
I get my mulch from stuff people dump in a park , most of it is eucalyptus. I guess it's different here in the land of kangaroo's.

I will be growing oysters on straw logs. I can get a 50 LB bale of straw for 5 bucks or a little bit of traveling and get a bale for 3 each. I can't get cotton hulls or any kind of hull unless I order 20 tons. I read mixed reviews about alafa for straw sup

That sounds pretty cheap. I guess if your not growing Shiitake you should be fine then.

It's going to be for sword belt and lion's mane. You can get fresh high quality shiitake from Canada here for 9.99 per lb. Mid grade for 6.99 if I recall correctly.
