Question about overwintering Datura innoxia

Hello friends,
I'm having a hard time finding specific information about this online, and I've looked high and low... so I'm hoping somebody here with experience growing Daturas can help me out.
I've read somewhere that it's possible to overwinter just the perennial rhizome of D. innoxia wrapped up in the fridge, then plant it in the spring again. I'm in Zone 6 so it gets too cold here for it to live through the winter any other way...bringing it inside isn't an option where I live. I'm a novice gardener, this was my first year with the Datura, so I'm just wondering how exactly to do the perennial-rhizome overwintering thing. Try as I might, not finding any actual practical info for doing so online or in books.
Any Datura growers here that have done this before? What does the perennial rhizome look like? Do I literally chop the Datura at the base of its stem and dig up the entire root structure, shake off the dirt and wrap it up, place in fridge? I assume that's basically what you do... but I love this plant so much, the thought of cutting it up already bums me out as it is, and so the last thing I want to do is fuck up the procedure and end up killing it. I'd almost rather let the plant die of natural causes and just plant seeds in the spring than try to chop it and overwinter it and kill it myself on accident..
I imagine the process is similar for any plant with a perennial rhizome, but again, I've never seen one in person and can't find good info online about this...confused about what exactly to do. I don't want to disrespect the Datura spirit, so advice on how to do this properly would be much appreciated.
Thanks gang

Don't remember which chapter, but in The Teachings of Don Juan, Castaneda lists in detail the procedure for transplanting the root. You could also save seeds and sow them early next year. Good luck

Datura grows easy from seed, it easily overtakes takes patures that have been overgrazed, so why do you want to grow from the root? Are you growing it for show, or do you harvest from the plant?
Took 3.5 grams dried, made it into a tea, and went into a delirium coma for 24 hours, same with the two guys that also downed an eighth. Woke up with such bad dehydration my tongue literally had bleeding cracks in it, so did my lips. I know my throat was bleeding too. Didnt know how badly it dehydrates a person, so I just drank straight liqour no chaser waiting for it to kick in.
