From what I've read you pretty much need a teacher when it comes to the violin, otherwise there's like a 95% chance you'll develop bad playing habits and those are really annoying to get rid of once they're established
Repertoire is teaching himself I think but I'm pretty sure he has a background playing cello so that would make it a whole lot easier to teach urself I imagine

Yeah man, classical string instruments are much better learned with a teacher to develop the proper techniques, which take a good while to get.
I played classical cello consistently for 13 years, haven't played as much the last couple but pick it up every now and then for non-classical music purposes

Yeah dude I absolutely love the classical string instruments, I can't personally play any of them but one day I intend to learn
I think the cello is probably my favorite just because it has so much more range than the others

Yeah I kinda feel the opposite. I always preferred the feel of fingerpicking. I never really could keep track of picks or capos, but I never lose my guitar, and I've kept the one that feels most comfortable.
My guitar has all the cracks in it and shit, but I go into a music store and try a nice classical guitar and I feel like "eww, that's nasty"

Cello is great, it's my favorite too even though I hated playing it classically.
It has such a mellow tone, wide pitch range, and various ways it can be played.
I feel like picking around on the cello right now actually.
I used to jam hard on that song with my brother, both on cello.

Wouldn't mind taking lessons but its very hard to find a teacher I respect Often times you have to sort through your teacher's bullshit
At this point having studied with a few different teachers in different genre's, on different instruments, I'd rather piece things together myself. Posture is largely transferable between instruments, theory and intonation obviously are as well. Might miss some finer stylistic points, but I'm not performing Classical repertoire
It sucks having to deal with teachers, because they all come with baggage ime, but its necessary in the early stages, and if you're studying ICM its always a good idea.

The hardest part about playing the violin for me was trying to hold it in place properly

So I think I might've given myself a mild concussion the other day
I got pissed off about something that I can no longer remember and hit myself in the head a few times, now I've had a headache for like 2 days and it won't go away
I thought it might've been because I stopped drinking cold Turkey but I wasn't drinking that much to begin with so I kinda don't think so, I also considered that it might be the speed I sniffed a few hours before I started hitting myself in the head but that doesn't make sense either cuz I've sniffed speed plenty of times without having a headache that lasted this long
I know somebody is gonna tell me to see a doctor but I really can't, so let this post serve as a friendly reminder not to be a jackass like me

Yeah, I realized about 2 weeks in that I was holding it all retarded. Its actually pretty intuitive once you get it, I'm 50/50 about the shoulder rest, leaning on keeping it
Things are going better with the violin than I expected, 6 weeks in and I have about an hours worth of repertoire that I can play through. Just need to continue detailing for a few months. Will be ready to get back to performing by Spring

The violin rocks. I wish I'd have fucked with a saxophone in band when I was a kid. Saxophones are amazing. My lungs aren't built for wind instruments though.

It doesn't take a lot of effort from your lungs to play sax, its a really fun instrument
Took me a few weeks to decide between violin and picking up another sax (played one a long time ago)

Is it a epic novel about how pathetic your life is? You'd have plenty of material

I have a low vital capacity though. Maybe I will pick one up. I "played" drums, guitar & bass.....never stuck with it though. I couldn't focus on practicing, and for guitar/bass my fine motor skills aren't good enough.

The only reason I get into playing drums was because I played snare in band and the transition was natural. The hardest part about drumming is thinking of each individual limb as its own entity.
