What is your outdoor activity?
#23736022 - 10/14/16 03:56 AM (7 years, 3 months ago) |

Hi!
In the last year I felt more and more bored and didnt really know what to do outside except mountainbiking.
What is your activity? I am planning to go camping but it is deeply cold in middle Europe right now and also for the next months.
Would like to get some American outdoor feeling during my time outside but don't really know how to get that
Any recommendations?
Thanks in advance!

I'm a hounder. Rocks and crystal hounder more often than not. If I'm by the sea it's shells, shark teeth, and sea glass. But I generally hunt for anything interesting. Sometimes that includes mushrooms and wild leeks or onions. I do hope to expand upon my foraging knowledge in. The next year or so.
Eh. I just appreciate observation. The more you know the more you see the more you can appreciate.

What part of the USA are you in?
Go foraging! There is lots to eat out there. Go fishing. Borrow someone's canoe and go camping. Take a trail out backpacking. Climb the tallest hill you can find. Get lost in the woods. Get someone to take you hunting.
My absolute favorite thing to do outside is sit on my ass at the end of the day and smoke and stare at my birds.

Get a license? There is no special training it's just basic hunter safety etiquette rules and going over regulations. I have a license it cost me like $20 and I didn't have to take a class. You can get a trapping license and go try trapping in some places. Go fishing. If the water freezes go ice fishing. Go sledding. Build a snow fort. Play with chainsaws. Take pictures of birds. Tap birch trees.

I try to do something outdoors nearly every weekend, with my wife and daughter. I feel being outdoors and connecting to nature is good for my kid. I'm in Florida and it's starting to get cooler, so I'm starting to camp again. I like to go to the forests and wma's(wildlife management areas) and drive the trails, four wheeling, go on short hikes and mushroom hunting. I used to fish a lot or go island hopping, but sold my boat. I do some research and try to find remnants of old ghost towns cemeteries, mines, mills, etc. deep in the woods. You really have to find out what's in your area, and take advantage of what resources you have available. I found that a local park has free classes for mushroom hunting, foraging, wildflowers, bird watching and more.

That sounds nice. Well, I live in Germany and you need a license for anything. For instance fishing, hunting , driving a boat and so on. If you do these things without any license, you will get a big fee.
Yesterday I have made this plan: I am going to make a divers license at University and want to join a Baseball team
Moreover, I had a look at canoes and found an Amazon a 3,50m canoe with which you can go on seas or rivers for 100 Euro. The reviews are great, so I am going to buy that in spring. And what is more, I am going to buy a big tant and my idea is to go to a sea camping and using that canoe.
Thanks for your ideas!
How do you manage such acitivites if it is really cold in your areas?

Your body will adjust to cold pretty fast if you train it. Around here it gets down to -40 (F) with wind chill down to -60 and complete darkness for a couple weeks. I like to go out on the porch with no shirt when it's like that and see how long I can take it. Then the next time it gets +32 it feels warm. We dress in lots of layers and leave no exposed skin, also nothing can get wet at those temperatures or it will burn you. Wear yarn socks too. When we go ice fishing we bring caribou firs to kneel on and lots of hot coffee. A warm woman helps take the edge off too-sometimes.

Well, that sounds nice.
I'd like to go hunting or fishing but to be honest, I dont wanna hurt any animal
I mean, I am a nice guy. I have taken mushrooms and all these stuff and know that one shouldn't kill for fun. That is not okay! If I kill, I have to eat the animal at least.
Besides that, I dont have any fishing or hunting license. It looks like this in my country:
Fishing license - a few weeks studying and finishing with an exam in order to be allowed to go fishing. Furthermore, you must pay regularly.
Hunting - there area some weaker guns that you can purchase legally without any license. If you want some kind of a real gun you have to pass a special course that lasts months.
So I have thougt about this: I get a gun that doesnt need any license and shoot on targets. Maybe targets that I put on a tree or cans as some kind of game.
What do you think about that?

I thought I found gold in a creek last winter. I got so excited I slipped on the bank and busted my ass. Turned out to just be zinwaldite, or gold mica. still pretty.
OP I personally enjoy shooting targets but I'd suggest not shooting a target on a tree with a low powered rifle. It can ricochet. Might be okay if you got a soft barked tree but I don't know if you know trees well. If its like a .22 there are back plated targets you can buy to capture the bullet so you don't have to worry about ricochet or shooting thru.

I'm in the mountains in the US so lots of mountain biking, boating: canoes and rafts down rivers, hiking, skiing, and climbing mountains. I also have a compound bow which I think is much more relaxing and involved than shooting a gun.... dont know if you would need a license for one where your at a recurve bow would be cheaper.
You should get that canoe... canoes are awesome. Can you link to the boat you want?

Sounds very nice. Have a look at explorer 2 canoe on Amazon. I am thinking of buying a bow with targets. I dont think that this is going to be a problem in my country. A bow looks much more like a toy than a airsoft gun.
First of all, I am going to buy a tent. Need a big one Next step is to buy some camping utilities

My suggestion would be to get into photography. You probably already have a cell phone with a camera, and from there, all you need is the interest in capturing your visions as you travel along in life. Digital photography is an amazing thing to learn and master, and it can go from almost free to very, very expensive. I was hooked on it after a girlfriend bought me a film camera back in the day, and now it has become a verified hobby. Good luck in your ventures my friend, as the moments are there to capture, you just have to envision yourself as the artist that can capture those moments in time that are priceless.

Sorry about the size (not of the poppies themselves ). I have found that you can photograph anything at any time of the year. You are correct that the winter isn't the best time to take up the hobby. The most photographed object, bar none, is the human female. You can do that any time of the year.

My activities are cycling, running, calisthenics, hiking, and mushrooms hunting.
I am not a huge fan of being indoors to much, I really feel more at home outside, so when the warmer months come I tend to be outside a lot, I do have an indoor cycling trainer I usually throw one of my bikes on around this time of year, that way I am not stagnating during the indoor months, but the snow hasn't been so bad this year, so have been able to stay fairly active this winter which is great, running through snow is thrilling, and not as slippery as walking through it, and if I am not running, then walking at least 5 miles a day, 6 days a week, and doing some simple calisthenics indoors, ive had good success the last few winters not gaining to much winter weight by doing something similar to this, so figured I would continue on that route this winter. I don't think I could live with myself if I ever got truly fat, maybe that comes off as egotistical, but it's how I feel. I value my health, and want to maintain it as I get older, and I can feel the age creeping up on me being that I am almost at midlife in age (35), so now is the time for proper discipline regarding the matter.
Cycling and running make up the majority of my time spent outdoors, I will even throw a backpack on and run to the grocery store, so even when I am going out to get groceries, I am still getting those gainz like a champ. When the late spring/summer hits I could spend sunup to sundown outside easily, just stay hydrated and I am fine.
I hope to get more involved in hiking this year, but haven't had the chance to travel to some of the spots around here which are supposed to be primo for it.

When I was young I spent a lot of time snowboarding. I really thought that it was going to become my life. I somehow thought that I was going to be a professional or something, but looking back on it now, that's absolutely absurd. It never could have happened for me.
These days I spend all of my time out backpacking or, in the hot summer months, I really enjoy flat water kayaking. Take a touring kayak, load it up with enough food and supplies for three or four days, take a fishing rod, and just head out on the water until supplies are gone. I had some weeks like that last summer that may have been the most fun I've ever experienced in my life.
I don't know how some people manage to live lives confined to the indoors. But then again, I know that some people look at me and ask the same in reverse, "Why does he go out in the wild so much? Doesn't that get old?"

Yeah the seat thing was a real problem for me initially but i got used to it. You can get slightly softer seats but I wouldn't go with a super soft seat. Your ass and leg muscles will go numb on long rides and that can even last for hours after a ride sometimes.

not trying to knock what you got too bad but for your next bike consider going to a thrift store or better yet a bike shop that sells used bikes and/ or does builds from used parts..... you'll get a lot more bike for your $100 relative to a retail outlet/ walmart

Fishing.
I picked it up a few months ago, after not fishing since I was a kid and I've since become fully invested with the hobby. There's a big creek no more than 10 minutes from where I live that has become my favorite spot in town. I'll go there a few times every week to see if I can pull something from the water. Just bought some water shoes to make wading down the creek easier, instead of crawling through the bushes.

What kind of camera do you want? Digital or film? I've got a digital SLR cost a shit ton of money.. Takes incredible pictures. I don't like it. There's something about getting film developed and printed that is really fun to me.
