So I'm in Thailand
    #23735260 - 10/13/16 08:05 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Moving here for a year to teach English and explore a bit. My girlfriend has been doing it for 6 months and loves it so I'm excited to be here.

For the next week she will be at work and ill be at the apartment during the day just hanging out, only problem is I'm starving and don't know how to order food! There's loads of street vendors out there but almost none of them speak English. Learning Thai is extremely difficult and because I'm not in the touristy areas of Bangkok no one can really help me at the moment. There's a McDonald's down the road but that's fuckin lame.

Anyone ever been before? Any advice?

It was Miami,FL->Singapore->Bangkok

Also I'm going to be working and will have a steady cash flow. Brought more than enough to last me until I get my first check in November. I'm about to walk around a bit and see what's cookin. Will update.

I would buy a childrens book that is in Thai, learn some simple phrases via pictures and words and get some food man!

Cant u just point to food at the food truck and give them money in your hand?

Or go to an airport or a hotel resturant, im sure theres some bilingal people around.

More touristy places had pictures on the menus and I just pointed a bunch.

Also sorry about the King. The Thais love their King. I wouldn't be surprised if they have a bunch of public holidays this week for mourning.

Learn how to read and write thai at the same time, otherwise it will be way more difficult to read/write correctly when you reach that level.

As far as ordering food, basic vocabulary and pointing go a long way. Don't haggle immediately, wait and get a feel for how things are priced in your area. Be prepared for a touch of minor food poisoning as your immune system adapts.

If you can find a thai message board with english speakers it will be a great place to learn about thailand and engage fluent speakers at the same time.

Here is a funny song I always think of when Thailand comes up:

Red Rider - Cowboys In Hong Kong (As Far As Siam)

The song is called Cowboys In Hong Kong but the album is As Far As Siam, Siam was the old name for Thailand I guess :stoned:

--------------------
Don't worry about me, I've got all that I need. And I'm singing my song to the sky

You know how it feels, With the breeze of the sun in your eyes. Not minding that time's passing by

I've got all and more, My smile, just as before. Is all that I carry with me

I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free

it would be good to do that in the mushroom identification forum and make sure to
read the rules and guidelines for identification first

Yeah the king passed away yesterday everyone seems a little down.

Ended up going to a little noodle shop and got some Tom Yum Goong. Delicious but spicy as hell, gotta learn to tell them to tone it down haha.

My girlfriend in her 6 months being here has managed to find a weed connect from a Canadian coworker, so that's pretty neat. (Even though the quality is pretty rough) Hoping to score some ketamine at one of the electronic music events or full moon parties, although I know how careful I must be because drugs are no joke here.

hahahaha... I'm sure that's exactly what the crown prince of thailand was thinking
or may he was thinking that he should study medicine at harvard, his wife came and
studied nursing. they were not interested in staying, I'm sure that if they wanted
to that door would have easily been opened since he was in fact prince

Why would a prince study medicine?

Shouldn't he be studying economics or something feasibly useful for a politician?
