Does Myc bruise blue?
    #23734587 - 10/13/16 03:55 PM (7 years, 4 months ago)

I've several monotubs.  One of them is much further along than the others.  The myc is in 5 gallons of composted poo/straw.  It is fully colonized and looks very white and very healthy.

It has been a loooong time since I did this, so correct me if I am wrong.

In looking for signs of contamination, I notice a few spots that are ever-so-slightly blueish.  It looks almost identical to the same shade a fruit would bruise.

So have I got a nasty baddy, or do I wait?  Pinheads are starting to form.

I feel I may be a hypochondriac, because the color is really slight.  Almost everywhere it is bright white, and these blueish patches are next to not visible.

Just wondering if this could be a bruise from when they were moved, the tub had to flex alot.

Thanks!

I've no ability to post a pic at this time.  I just had my gf look at it.  She thinks it is still white.  I've been reading that a contam would likely be obvious, but this is more of a "Blue Hue" than it really is coloration.

I guess I'll wait and see a few more days.

Drying will cause bruising.  Is the blue close to a poly hole?  If so, that could be the case...

The issue was indeed drying.

Thanks everyone for responding.  Since the tub was heartily colonized, went ahead and ppooped the top and misted the sides.  A day and a half later, I have solid white growth going again and pins starting.  Guess I need to watch my moisture levels.

Next time I am putting a cheapie hygrometer inside.

Thank you all very much!

Mist the surface if it's dry, moisture evaporating off the sub is your pinning trigger, not moisture evaporating off the walls. No hygrometer needed knowing how much moisture is in the air of the chamber tells you nothing about the surface, just look at it and mist if dry. If it keeps drying too fast tighten the poly.

The advice is very much appreciated.  I just did another light misting.

I noticed that the tub in which I chose to use breathable bandages (Read, Really big ass breathable band-aids,) that the colonization happened at a much more rapid rate compared to the poly ones.  Also, it retained moisture much better.

I took off the bandages once it was fully colonized and replaced with polyfil. got pins a day or so after.  All in all, this one is doing better than the ones that were polyfil only.  Maybe I need to plug them tighter as you suggested.

Thanks for the great advice! :-D

Think of it like this:

You could grow out in the open - with nothing but a tray----but be ready to mist your tub at the first signs of it drying. If you could be there for your tub...ready to mist at the proper times and ready to give it all the love you had 24/7..... you would have a great grow. BECAUSE OF ALL THE FAE!

But none of us can do that...except for Bodhisatta-but none of us give a fuck about him anyway...    (J/K)

We can't be there for our grow 100% of the time-so we decided to 'dial-in' the tub for good conditions with minimal hands-on time invested...

To get back on topic-blueing around the holes or on the substrate after a few flushes means your shiz is drying out. You need to alter your methods to either allow yourself to mist more often or to dial-in your tub with poly to make it or more automatic for you...

I hope this helps you a bit!

  Thanks.

I didn't use a casing layer, which probably would have helped...  Also, the polyfil needed to be packed much tighter.

Also, I am currently available 24/7 for this grow.  So really 4-6 times per day is the norm, eh?

Ah, live and learn!

BUT I GOT BABIES! :-D
