Not shaking your jars can allow you transfer to them while they rest on their sides

Some of my jars are quite tall and transferring agar into them in my SAB can be tricky. I had some popcorn jars cool down in the PC. The grains were stuck together which is typical of many grains.

I was careful enough with them and laid them gently on their sides and only 5 or 6 grains in each jar fell down, so the rest were kept in the end of the jar, so I can take the cap off and no grains fall out. My jars were pretty full too.

I was able to loosen the caps and angle the lids outwards from the bottom, so if there were any contaminants in the air they would have a harder time falling/getting into the jar. I also found it much easier to transfer the agar into the jar. I usually tap the transfer tool on the top so the agar falls off, I never like having to do the tapping motion as it could stir up air. I was able to put the transfer tool in and wipe the agar off on the neck of the jar (keeping away from the top lip area), this would need awkward bending of the wrist if I was to do it with upright jars.

Afterwards I shook the jars as usual and they very easily broke up, so its not like they were unusually sticky. There was no gypsum in the grains but even with it I reckon most people could do this and might help depending on your own setup. You could practice with a empty jar in your SAB to see if it suits you. I would also test your jars on their sides before putting them in the SAB in case excessive amounts of grain fall down.

If you sprinkle gypsum into your jars then you could possibly do this with a partially full jar, shake it well before PCing, then top it off with a layer of non treated grain which would fuse together easier. After the transfer the shake would mix up the grains well, as some might want gypsum for other reasons other than shake-ability.
