Little orange mushrooms
    #2373322 - 02/23/04 09:13 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

These are Late Fall Oysters growing on 12 to 1, sawdust to bran. They took a long time to form pins maybe 2 1/2 weeks. They should turn green as they mature.

I left them outside in the cold just below freezing for 8 hours to initiate fruiting. After they were out in the cold the surface started turning orange. After about a week I put them out in the cold for another 8 hours and the primordia could be seen a couple of days after that, its about 4 days since I first noticed the primordia.

When they are not outside they are kept in a wet plastic bag in the light at about 60 degrees.

They would probably grow faster with a better air exchange, so I'm going to put them in larger bag with a wet sponge and see if this speed up the process.

Do you know if the parent oxidized to this color at all?  I'm just wondering if this is akin to the little blue aborts some renegade cultivators see sometimes
I've only grown a few oysters, and never saw this degree of coloring. . .I hope nothing bad happened, and hope to see them continue to develop.  Best of luck!

Wouldn't that just be metabolites the mycelium is giving off? Byproducts of digesting the substrate. Nothing to worry about I would presume.

The parent had some of the orange coloring. They seem pretty healthy :smirk: I don't think they've aborted.

Later Fall Oysters are a different genus than Pleurotus they're in the genus Panellus. Their species name is P. serotinus. This link has some pictures of ones that Stymee found and picture of the batch that I cloned them from.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...sb=5&o=&fpart=1

They ussually have a little orange color in the mushrooms when I find them, along with yellow and grey, but they're mostly green with yellowish gills.

Hopefully they'll develope into well shaped fruiting bodies and I can post pictures as they get bigger, but I think they will be teeny tiny compared to the ones found on logs. The jar they're in is about 3 1/2 inches across.

I think it's part of the process of making fruit bodies.

Have you eaten the Late Fall Oyster? I find them with frequency where I am located. I don't usually pick because the Audobon Guide doesn't recommend them as a very tasty species.

I've eaten them and sometimes they are good, sometimes they are bitter.  I'm not sure what makes the difference whether its what they are growing on or how old they are or something else. The ones these were grown from were sort of bitter.

This was the only thing I picked that was an edible on the day I found them.

These things grow really slow. They like to grow best when the tempature is at about freezing. I should have done some intermediate pictures, but without looking at the first picture it was as if they were not growing at all.

Would anyone like to try to grow these?

PM me, I have seven small plastic zipper bags with colonized sawdust and bran from another jar that was not fruited.
