Vermiculite on King Oysters at harvest
    #23732117 - 10/12/16 06:28 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I use vermiculite only for casing my Kings. I am having to trim a lot off the bottom and still have flakes of vermiculite on the stems and caps. Does anyone have any tips to reduce or eliminate this?

I have same experience as you. I stopped using vermiculite because unclean mushrooms are unacceptable.
One of the solutions is to use vermiculite with big chunks, which are easier to clean. Another is to find different casing material.

Do you still use a casing and if so what are you using?
Thanks!

I'm not growing any mushrooms atm but I will soon. I have been renovating and my temperatures were to high during the summer for eryngii anyway.
I want too see if I can avoid casing by having higher humidity in fruiting space. If not, then I will try to see if I can use peat without heat pasteurization. Another option is to find proper vermiculite. But than again, I can have a problems with regulations if I can't prove vermiculite is safe (not containing asbestos or some other toxic impurities).
