NHL 2016-2017
    #23731629 - 10/12/16 03:34 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

Hockey starts tonight. The schedule looks like they were going for local matchups. The preseason was the same way. Seems like every game the Hawks played was against St. Louis or Detroit.

I haven't even really looked into hockey yet this year. Not even sure what changes have been made in SJ. I see they won their 7th straight opening game though, not that it means anything.

You see the toronto rookie? 4 goals in his first game. Broke all kinds of records. The opening ceremonies for the new Oilers arena was pretty cool too. Tons of technology, tvs and the biggest scoreboard in north America I think.

Good luck to Toronto. Biggest city in Canada. The best hockey country in the world. Last year when no Canadian team made the playoffs, I'm like, this isn't good for the NHL. Either Toronto or Montreal needs to kick the shit out of everyone, for the sake of all hockey fans. I'm for the Hawks all the way, but Canada needs to do this for the sake of history.

Marian Hossa got his 500th goal tonight. Given the number of times he sacrifices for defense and team play. the HOF is a sure thing.

Hossa is an all around monster. He's definitely getting in.

On a side note the rookies and sophomores, namely Conor and Austin, are killing it in the early season. Austin Matthews has 8 points in 5 games, which is a 1.60 P/G (3rd) and Conor Mcdavid is tied for the league lead in points with 9 in 6 games.

While it took PK Subban a couple years to wear out his welcome in Montreal, despite being an elite  player, it might be couple weeks to do it in Nashville. A couple of his team mates say he's just an exuberant guy but others say he's just a dick. Meanwhile in Montreal the team mates are raving about Shea Webber and what he means to the team.

I did read a thoughtful balanced article in the Canadian hockey press saying in recent times Montreal got rid of their respected captain and another respected veteran, and maybe PK just never got taught the ropes by someone who was there for 10 years. Baseball and hockey, in particular don't take kindly to young hot dogs.

Hawks started slow at 2-3-1. Now they won 5 in a row and are in first place. Very encouraging because there are so many young barely known guys on the roster. On the other hand, they played 8 home games and 3 away, so we will see. I believe the Hawks and Bulls play unbalanced schedules because the Circus comes to town in the winter and they both go on the road for 3 weeks.

I haven't been watching much hockey this year. What the fuck is going on in Columbus?

Are they the most improved team this year?, Well them and the Oilers.

Columbus has always had a nasty team. They underperformed last year. This year it looks like its clicking for them defensively and they aren't doing too bad on O either.

The Oilers are just ridiculous. They have just been drafting top picks for the last 5years and now they have a All star team of youngsters. Although I see at least half of them getting shipped out, like Hall, at some point once they negotiate larger contracts.

Oilers have been in a rebuild for the last decade. All they needed was a billion dollar stadium to put the drive back in.

I can't help but point out Edmonton's draft lottery luck.

They got
4th overall 2016 Puljujärvi
1st overall 2105 McDavid
3rd overall 2014 Draisaitl
7th overall 2013 Nurse
1st overall 2012 Yakupov
1st overall 2011 Nugent-Hopkins
1st overall 2010 Hall

That's 4 number 1 picks in 7 years. That's fucking ridiculous. That's an average draft pick of 2.57.

Maybe they can draft another forward and can use one of the parking pylons for a defenseman.

The Vancouver Canucks suck. Computer analysis indicates they have a 17% chance of reaching the playoffs. Their GM says he wants to hold on to the good or potentially good 22-27 year olds that give them a future. He said he wouldn't ask their star players, the Sedin brothers to give up their no trade clauses, but if they came to him, he would definitely consider trading them for prospects.

Canadian hockey is a paradox; definitely still the most talented country on earth in international play, like the Olympics. But struggling in the NHL, no Canadian team made the 16 team seeding for the playoffs last year, for various reasons, one being the weakness of the Canadian dollar. (But I still don't understand why somebody would rather play in Nashville or Phoniex than Toronto.) But players from North America and Europe prefer to play for American teams (or Canadian teams have bad upper management) In the old days their were clauses, like Montreal had first claim on players out of Quebec,

Right now Montreal looks good. Ottawa and Winnipeg are probable, and Edmonton, if not now, the future. Toronto, the biggest city in Canada still looks like a no go for the playoffs. Their 48 year drought for the championship is the longest in the NHL,( but due to the old old days they are the 2nd winningest Cup team after Montreal). The fan base is still incredibly loyal and their Forbes financial value is usually #1.

Gangsters don't die, they just move to Florida, and Tampa, and LA...

Van is a little different, but if you weren't making multi-millions there is no reason to live in Edmonton or Winnipeg.

The Sedins are an interesting pair, but I doubt you could every move them individually, their value is that they are a pair, and that would be such an enormous deal for two players well past their prime. I think you need to wait until the end of next season and run out the clock on their contracts and they can go play in Sweden, or getting taken on in a bottom tier team at a discount. Jagr at 45 is only doing $4mil. Iginla is at 5mil at 39. But to pick up both for 11 or 12 mil is such a huge UFA deal. Its a rebuild and half, but their experience and leadership for a young raw team is valuable.

Toronto doesn't need to win games if you are the most valuable franchise. You sell out games and they are always televised, win or lose. Mind you the Rangers never took that approach.

I think it's great. The Hawks don't even develop much through the draft. They retool from Europe. Not sure how they compare with the Canadians, but the Russians and other Slavs are much tougher than the American players.

The Capitals have received 3 fighting majors all year. The ducks have the most with 25.

Reportedly the Hawks are signing Panarin.the Bread man long term. Before the season  started he wanted 6 million a year for 6 years. Since he's now their leading scorer, so the price probably went up. He plays on the second line with Kane and artisimov. This year Kane has struggled on goals and Panarin is still scoring.

This move puts the Hawks way over the cap next year. Speculation is we have to dump Marcus Kruger and 2nd string goalie Scott Darling (wno grew up about 8 miles from me). Darling has trade value because he won most of his games when Crawford whas having his appendix removed We would have to trade Darling for prospects to avoid adding salary

Wow, the caps are on a tear right now. Their current 8 game win streak includes the trouncing of the Western Conference's top record holding Chicago Blackhawks (5-0), the defending champion Penguins (5-2), the Atlantic leading Montreal Canadians (4-1), and the league leading Columbus Blue Jackets'(5-0) who had their record tying win streak stopped at 16 games.

Half way through the year it looks like Sid the Kid is poised for another art ross, so long as he stays healthy his P/G project him to pass McDavid soon. I think Sid also wants to win the Rocket Richard this year, as he has never won it outright, although he shared it with Stamkos one year I believe. You can't count out Ovechkin for the Richard though, he's still scoring amazing goals.

Does anybody understand how the expansion draft is going to work, when Las Vegas picks it's players? First I heard each team could protect 16 or 17 players, which would be good. Then I heard some players will be automatically protected because of the type of contract they have.
Then I heard that some teams will expose good players to reduce their cap numbers. the Hawks are way over the cap for next year. But it would make more sense for them  to trade 2nd string goalie Scott Darling after the season for prospects, than just give him away.

Apparently they can only protect 11 players this time (16 was the number in 2000).

Yes, you're right but there are a couple other clauses. First they said 7 forwards 3 defenseman and one goalie, but they altered that. If your team is more talented at forward or defenseman you keep 10 skaters regardless of position.

It's weird because last expansion draft there were 2 new teams and you could protect 16. It sounds like the NHL has a real interest in Vegas
being at least somewhat competitive right from the start.

And then the whole cap issue, where teams will let better players go cause they need the cap space.

There is going to be some big surprises. Brent Seabrook is one of the better defenseman in the NHL, but he gets 5.3 million and Duncan Keith whos much more awarded gets a million less. That would solve all their cap problems, but maybe Vegas doesn't want Seabrook at 5.3 million. You can make good players available that are not attractive at their contract, and lets them keep Hjarmesllon  as well a Keith, and maybe Seabrook. I think there will be some very good players made available that wont get taken.

Wish I could have seen the Pens Caps game last night. I think it was the Pens who had a 3-0 lead in the first period. Caps came back, but lost it in OT. 8 goals were scored in the 2nd period.

It was actually caps who had that 3-0 lead. Pens put up 6 IN THE 2ND, caps came back and eventually it was knotted at 7. The pens won in OT. Lots of crazy high scoring games as of late.

And this expansion is going to be interesting to say the least. I'm sure all of the teams will protect their most valuable players as far as production vs salary is concerned. Vegas might have a pool of overvalued contracts to choose from, although as you guys pointed out, they will have a lot more to choose from than previous expansions.

I was just reading an article about this and thought I would ask for some unbiased opinions...

Patrick Marleau, Hall of Famer or no?

Probably. 500 goals used to be a sure thing. And he did it all on one team and was the captain for a long time. I couldn't find out much about him defensively. His plus/minus was average, and I couldn't find the year by year standings on the Seilke to see if he was ever anywhere on the list.
More likely yes than no. I don't know if there are 500 goal scorers who didn't make it.

The Detroit Redwings are in serious danger of ending their 24 year consecutive year of making the playoffs. They've lost 5 in a row and are in last place. Their good old players got too old and their promising young players are too young.
It's still possible, if they get hot. They take 8 teams from each conference and their are a there are quite a few lousy teams at the bottom to move up on. But it is an important historical issue.

Marleau is in for sure.

There are 8 teams in the east within 7 points of a playoff spot. The odds are certainly stacked against the redwings, but they've still got a shot.

Claude Juilian gets fired, maybe the Caps ex-GM George McPhee will pick him up and start a team of everybody else's trash out in Vegas.

Sid the Kid has finally tied McDavid in points (60). It wont be long before he pulls away. He's also leading in goals at 30.

Meanwhile Ovechkin is lurking in the background with 26 goals. This was looking like Crosby's year to win the Rocket, but Ovechkin looks like he's about to make a run for it.

He looks to have the best chance but there are several others. I think Ovechkin would gladly take a lower goal scoring total if he could lead the Caps past the 2nd round of the playoffs for the first time in his career.

Yea, Ovechkin has accepted the fact that he is slowly fading out of the spotlight. He is dedicated to winning the cup, and has bought in 100% to the system. As long as the caps D stays healthy (ideally they should add another solid piece before the deadline) they have just as good a chance as anybody to win the cup. They just need to get passed Pittsburg.

The Caps defineitely need to win to legitimate the Ovechkin career, but I wouldn't write him off for the Richard. The reasons why the Caps don't get it done in the playoffs is too complicated for me to understand. I don't see so many Eastern Games. But I know in general, when a team has a fair amount of talent, and we're looking at decade or more, I always look at the owner, President, GM and Head coach. Over a significant amount of time, that is what decides.

Chicago beat Minnesota on the road last night, for 2 consecutive wins against the Wild. Minnesota still has a 5 point lead for best in the West. But nothing matters in hockey except the playoffs and Chicago is establishing the psychological "stick it in your brain" that you can't beat us in the playoffs.

Hawks captain Jonathon Toews, who had a slow offensive start, had 5 points last night.

Yes it's getting closer to the real thing. Will the Caps (finally) and the Wild advance or will we go back to the usuals, Pittsburgh, Chicago etc. moving ahead in the playoffs?
Also interesting that we will see many Canadian teams in the playoffs and all of them could make a mark.

Tampa traded Ben Bishop to LA to back up Jonathon Quick. Both teams are on the outside looking in but close to wild cards.

Hawks pull Crawford for a 6th attacker with 90 seconds left, down 1-0 to the Islanders. Panarin the breadman scores to tie it, then Toews and Panarin score in the shootout giving them a 6th consecutive win and 11 out of 12. It was a big comeback after getting only 13 shots on goal in the first 2  periods. They are one point behind Minnesota for best in the Western Conference.

Definitely peaking at the right time, but will have to face the challenge of losing 2nd goalie Scott Darling (who was playing great) for 3 weeks.

In a move I endorse, NHL commissioner Gary Bettemen issued a letter to the Arizona legislature telling them he will move the Coyotes out of Arizona if they do not relocate from their arena in Glendale. The franchise has had talks with people in Seattle and Portland. I still think the league could move them to Quebec City.

Well there is a lot of honor in the NHL. Big star Malkin took several good punches to the head from Wheeler on the Jets. It was retaliation for a previous game when Malkin hit Wheeler with a hard check to the head. Malkin said he knew his check was very questionable and he respected Wheeler for retaliating. Refreshing.

The Flames came seemingly out of nowhere and won 10 straight, they're now 2nd in the Pacific.

Sharks still have a 9 point lead and are 2 back of Chicago for best in the west. Pavelski has 7 goals in the last 5 games.

It will all be happening soon. Good Luck. I'm not sure how the pairings go but I don't think we could play each other till the 3rd round. Could be wrong but I think only wild card teams can be paired with the other division in the first two rounds. I'm not sure.

OK Elax. You were right, I was wrong. Sydney Crosby is the biggest douchebag punk in the NHL. No suspension because he is a superstore. But he is going to get battered by Ottawa next year and maybe a lot of other teams earlier. I would like to see him injury marginalized before the playoffs.

yeah I noticed that slide. They better fix their problems fast. Coming in second would mean a first round match up with Edmonton. It's good for the game, but I was hoping Connor McDavid wouldn't be this good, this fast. Guess it's my deep seated hatred of the Oilers from the 80s.

The Wild are down trending too, and Hawks opening up a big lead in the the Western Conference. But I hope they don't win the President's Cup. It just adds pressure and who cares.

In the East, the 4 best teams are in the meto division. That creates a situation where it is better better to come in 4th, because 2 plays 3 and ensures that one of the best teams in hockey gets eliminated in the first round.

Vegas still favors caps over Hawks by the slightest of margins but history says otherwise.

I would hate to see Pittsburgh win again unless Malkin and Kessell are the stars and Crosby gets shut down.

The sucker punch was dirty but maybe he didn't react fast enough. Did he notice that the guy had thrown down his gloves.

I've seen the Crosby clip quite a few times, coming from behind and going for the guys balls with the stick. The blade of a stick is a very dangerous weapon. He is apparently un-suspendable. But quite a few people  in the NHL from players to General Managers have said this is going to come back on him. If he is immune from league punishment others will do the job. I've been watching this game for many decades and there have only been a few superstar scorers who could take on anybody. And anybody can get demolished from behind.

The biggest dick move I've seen from Sydney this season was when he was third man in and started sucker punching  a guy who was already tied up with a Pittsburgh player. Like one of the rules of Fight Club, two guys to a fight.
