I was going to comment on how I thought fighting was down this year and then I realized my team has been in the least fights.
The Capitals have received 3 fighting majors all year. The ducks have the most with 25.

Reportedly the Hawks are signing Panarin.the Bread man long term. Before the season started he wanted 6 million a year for 6 years. Since he's now their leading scorer, so the price probably went up. He plays on the second line with Kane and artisimov. This year Kane has struggled on goals and Panarin is still scoring.
This move puts the Hawks way over the cap next year. Speculation is we have to dump Marcus Kruger and 2nd string goalie Scott Darling (wno grew up about 8 miles from me). Darling has trade value because he won most of his games when Crawford whas having his appendix removed We would have to trade Darling for prospects to avoid adding salary

Wow, the caps are on a tear right now. Their current 8 game win streak includes the trouncing of the Western Conference's top record holding Chicago Blackhawks (5-0), the defending champion Penguins (5-2), the Atlantic leading Montreal Canadians (4-1), and the league leading Columbus Blue Jackets'(5-0) who had their record tying win streak stopped at 16 games.
Half way through the year it looks like Sid the Kid is poised for another art ross, so long as he stays healthy his P/G project him to pass McDavid soon. I think Sid also wants to win the Rocket Richard this year, as he has never won it outright, although he shared it with Stamkos one year I believe. You can't count out Ovechkin for the Richard though, he's still scoring amazing goals.

Does anybody understand how the expansion draft is going to work, when Las Vegas picks it's players? First I heard each team could protect 16 or 17 players, which would be good. Then I heard some players will be automatically protected because of the type of contract they have. Then I heard that some teams will expose good players to reduce their cap numbers. the Hawks are way over the cap for next year. But it would make more sense for them to trade 2nd string goalie Scott Darling after the season for prospects, than just give him away.

Apparently they can only protect 11 players this time (16 was the number in 2000).

Yes, you're right but there are a couple other clauses. First they said 7 forwards 3 defenseman and one goalie, but they altered that. If your team is more talented at forward or defenseman you keep 10 skaters regardless of position.
It's weird because last expansion draft there were 2 new teams and you could protect 16. It sounds like the NHL has a real interest in Vegas being at least somewhat competitive right from the start.
And then the whole cap issue, where teams will let better players go cause they need the cap space.
There is going to be some big surprises. Brent Seabrook is one of the better defenseman in the NHL, but he gets 5.3 million and Duncan Keith whos much more awarded gets a million less. That would solve all their cap problems, but maybe Vegas doesn't want Seabrook at 5.3 million. You can make good players available that are not attractive at their contract, and lets them keep Hjarmesllon as well a Keith, and maybe Seabrook. I think there will be some very good players made available that wont get taken.

Wish I could have seen the Pens Caps game last night. I think it was the Pens who had a 3-0 lead in the first period. Caps came back, but lost it in OT. 8 goals were scored in the 2nd period.

Penguins v. Capitals, last, was proof that the Pens are a volatile team. They are plastic, and can live up to the occasion.

It was actually caps who had that 3-0 lead. Pens put up 6 IN THE 2ND, caps came back and eventually it was knotted at 7. The pens won in OT. Lots of crazy high scoring games as of late.
And this expansion is going to be interesting to say the least. I'm sure all of the teams will protect their most valuable players as far as production vs salary is concerned. Vegas might have a pool of overvalued contracts to choose from, although as you guys pointed out, they will have a lot more to choose from than previous expansions.

Patrick Marleau, Hall of Famer or no?

Probably. 500 goals used to be a sure thing. And he did it all on one team and was the captain for a long time. I couldn't find out much about him defensively. His plus/minus was average, and I couldn't find the year by year standings on the Seilke to see if he was ever anywhere on the list. More likely yes than no. I don't know if there are 500 goal scorers who didn't make it.

The Detroit Redwings are in serious danger of ending their 24 year consecutive year of making the playoffs. They've lost 5 in a row and are in last place. Their good old players got too old and their promising young players are too young. It's still possible, if they get hot. They take 8 teams from each conference and their are a there are quite a few lousy teams at the bottom to move up on. But it is an important historical issue.

Marleau is in for sure.
There are 8 teams in the east within 7 points of a playoff spot. The odds are certainly stacked against the redwings, but they've still got a shot.
Claude Juilian gets fired, maybe the Caps ex-GM George McPhee will pick him up and start a team of everybody else's trash out in Vegas.

Sid the Kid has finally tied McDavid in points (60). It wont be long before he pulls away. He's also leading in goals at 30.
Meanwhile Ovechkin is lurking in the background with 26 goals. This was looking like Crosby's year to win the Rocket, but Ovechkin looks like he's about to make a run for it.

He looks to have the best chance but there are several others. I think Ovechkin would gladly take a lower goal scoring total if he could lead the Caps past the 2nd round of the playoffs for the first time in his career.

Yea, Ovechkin has accepted the fact that he is slowly fading out of the spotlight. He is dedicated to winning the cup, and has bought in 100% to the system. As long as the caps D stays healthy (ideally they should add another solid piece before the deadline) they have just as good a chance as anybody to win the cup. They just need to get passed Pittsburg.
