Gas exchange in monotubs, modifying my tek for best results.

Again, my disclaimer is this... I have, many moons ago, had successful grows.I used monotubs and had great results. Now it seems much of the information I have is outdated and hoping for some guidance. In other words, I am confoozled.
Okay. So, rye grain bags. Let them fully colonize and then move to 5 lbs of poo/straw/coir mix in monotubs. Monotubs colonized in the dark, which I am now discovering is unnecessary. So they are lit up with fluros as of today.
The monotubs are 51 L rubbermaid containers with a clear top. There are six holes around the box, cut with a large 1.5 inch hole saw. The holes were stuffed with polyfil. As an experiment, one I used breathable medical tape, and it seemed to colonize pretty darn fast.
Anyway, the last time I did this method using polyfil, I had pretty good results. But Now I am reading about tape vs polyfil, and "FAE" which I am reading as Full Air Exchange.
I am an idiot for asking, but does this mean to remove the polyfil and allow for full breathing? It was my belief that polyfil also helped to prevent contamination and to keep humidity.
Also, should I swap out the tub with breathable tape for polyfil? It seems to have colonized faster and retained much humidity.
I did fine years ago, lmao, whys it all gotta change? ;-)
Thanks for the response. I just want to clarify that I am giving these guys every thing they need.

It's literally the same besides colonizing in the dark. The only thing that's changed is our understanding of why things are like how they are. Poly won't keep contams out, and it will keep humidity up, meaning you don't have to mist, or only have to mist every so often. If you had low humidity, you'll have to mist more to compensate. Extra FAE makes very healthy fruits, but requires more maintenance. Everyone grows differently in this regard. Experiment, and find what works best for you. Personally I have no poly in my top holes, and generally mist once or twice a day.

Thanks very much for the reply. Yes, I just don't want to overthink it, LOL, which is probably what I am doing.
It is nice to be back in the hobby and see how knowledge has grown. I've plenty of humidity so far, and looks like there is no misting needed.
Perhaps, if I want better FAE, I should look into open monotubs inside a greenhouse tower.
I forgot to mention, I have an oscillating fan aimed at the monotubs that moves around alot of air.
I think I will take the singular monotub that has medical tape and trade it out for polyfil.
I really appreciate the response! So much knowledge to absorb!
